Why did you want to be an intern at Amtrak?

“I'm a veteran currently serving in the United States Navy reserves and I noted that Amtrak was recognized for being a top veteran employer, and has a very diverse workplace. As an African American woman I felt like I'd be able to fit in better with an open environment. I didn't know much about railroads, or the police, but the opening in communications, and the ability to work on a national safety campaign definitely attracted me.”

What is your favorite part about being an Amtrak intern?

“My internship is a hands on experience that is helping me learn a lot more about communications. This is a totally new experience for me, as I used to work in warehouse logistics. I feel like I came to the right place and this is all a great learning experience for me! ”

What are some of your job responsibilities?

“I assist on Amtrak's national railroad safety initiative - which entails contacting local law enforcement agencies and schools, publishing media advisories and press releases, maintaining our website Stay Off the Tracks, and posting on social media.”

Is there a specific project that you've worked on that you are most proud?

"I'm very proud of the video that we produced for the company's safety contest. We filmed at the stations in Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Washington DC, and captured different safety scenarios that would be paired with music. It was meant to be fun, but it also focused on some simple safety precautions that people often forget when they're at a train station. Our video actually won first place in the contest, and the Chief of Police was awarded our trophy."

Do you have any advice for someone interested in being an intern at Amtrak?

“Make sure to check over your resume, not once but twice in order to be considered.

When hired embrace the experience, and seek feedback and new challenges when the opportunities arise. The managers are knowledgeable and flexible to make this the best experience possible and to ensure learning through application.

This opportunity has been very rewarding for me and exceeded my expectations!”
