SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Operations Support group—comprised of the asset information / geographic information systems (GIS) team, the engineering asset management (EAM) team, the asset strategy team, and the data analytics team—is responsible for delivering and implementing the tools and technology required to achieve Amtrak’s enterprise asset management strategy for the Infrastructure Maintenance & Construction Services (IMCS) disciplines. Operations Support drives value by shaping the product an portfolio asset management and data analytics strategies to deliver solutions that reduce asset downtime, extend equipment life, and optimize system performance to reduce the overall cost of asset management. Developing robust predictive analytics for the IMCS disciplines (Track, Communications & Signals, Electric Traction, Bridges & Buildings, Equipment & Facilities) is critical to developing a data-driven decision making process and driving an industry-leasing asset management practice at Amtrak.
The Lead Data Analyst is responsible for using asset data captured by Amtrak’s Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system, Enterprise GeoSpatial (EGS) system, the Track Geometry Car and Data Lake, Catenary Car, and Amtrak’s Enterprise Data Warehouse to develop data models for predictive analytics. The Lead Data Analyst assists the IMCS disciplines in enhancing their data collection processes. The Lead Data Analyst helps automate calculations related to maintenance activities and root cause analysis that would otherwise be done manually. The Lead Data Analyst’s work contributes to allowing the IMCS disciplines to proactively plan infrastructure maintenance activities—reducing asset downtime, extending equipment life, and optimizing system performance—reducing the overall cost of asset management.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Support development of data models for maintenance and use in asset repair versus replacement decisions for the IMCS disciplines.
- Identify new data points that would be useful in enhancing predictive analytics models.
- Automate calculations and analysis used for asset assessment.
- Integrate asset and maintenance information, data collection, and history through Amtrak’s EAM system and make it available to those who need it for decision making. The format of the data must be suitable for the audience, i.e., field technicians will need more granularity than executive management.
- Work with all levels of Engineering management to identify and thoroughly understand the Department’s work and asset management needs and ensure data collection and analytics are in alignment with those needs.
- Perform root cause analysis, evaluate asset and maintenance data for trends, and prepare proactive maintenance/asset replacement recommendations according to ISO 55000, PAS 55, or other Asset Management standards.
- Gather requirements, analyzing data sets, and designing dashboards and visualizations to ensure delivery of reporting to support strategic decision-making.
- Administer a governance model for identifying, approving, and managing requests for data analytics tools and reporting.
- Support ongoing quality control activities for data analytics systems and interfaces and develop quality assurance processes to drive continuous improvement in use of predictive analytics in enterprise asset management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor Degree in Engineering, Statistics, Computer Science, or the equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience. Master’s degree a plus.
- Must have six years (6) experience in performing data analytics work that supports predictive actions around enterprise asset management.
- Highly skilled and experience manipulating and analyzing data to develop descriptive and predictive analytics for asset management utilizing advanced Structured Query Language (SQL).
- Advanced Tableau or similar data visualization software.
- Knowledge of python, R, or other coding languages.
- Must be able to navigate new data domains quickly, understand the underlying business problems, and apply appropriate statistical models, including predictive models.
- Able to effectively communicate with all levels of technological experience, including field and staff with no prior experience in using computer and mobile systems, to enable them to make the best use of data.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong organizational and collaborative skills.
- Working knowledge of asset, work and maintenance management, best practices and processes.
- Demonstrated ability to build rapport with all levels of the organization and to communicate effectively with department heads, managers, supervisors and clerical staff.
- Demonstrated ability to apply strong analytical skills.
- Working knowledge of database and data warehouse design.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Understanding of railroad infrastructure asset management and use of predictive analytics for asset management decision making.
- Working knowledge of asset management systems and Geospatial Information Systems (GIS).
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Office and field work environment
- Travel up to 20%
- Travel to other Amtrak offices and right-of-way sites that are not accessible by train travel

- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
PAY TRANSPARENCY:
The salary/hourly range is $94,300 - $122,256. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
