Job Summary
Partner with stakeholders in IT and the company's business divisions to define requirements and develop solutions for scalable and reliable applications and platforms designed to meet business growth. Contribute to the creation, maintenance, and management of Business Intelligence reports and dashboards for clients in the business, while supporting end users with data analysis and report creation, and troubleshooting. Maintain a strong knowledge of BI tools and programming languages used by the organization, as well as experience in systems design and a strong understanding of development, testing, and integration methodologies. Possess required knowledge of current and emerging IT products, services, and processes.
The Lead Forecasting Analyst transforms complex data into actionable insights that inform business decisions and improve operational performance. As a subject matter expert, this role leads demand forecasting projects, partners with cross-functional teams, and develops scalable reporting tools. The analyst blends internal and external data sources to identify trends, evaluate strategic options, and support decision-making across the organization. This role operates with limited oversight and may coach junior analysts.
Duties include supporting the maintenance and application of travel demand forecasting models and tools along with business analytics pertaining to demand, addressing Amtrak ridership, ticket revenue, passenger miles, service levels, and high-level pricing changes as well as competing modes of travel.
Essential Functions
- Lead the development of ridership and ticket revenue projections and market demand information to guide operating decisions and capital investments, utilizing Amtrak’s econometric forecasting analytics / models
- Develop dashboards, reports, and visualizations using customized scripts and BI tools (e.g., Python, R, Tableau, Power BI, SQL)
- Integrate and analyze internal and external data sources to assess market, customer, and/or operational trends.
- Collaborate with business partners to model outcomes of proposed strategies and provide data-driven recommendations.
- Contribute to data governance, may mentor junior analysts, and promote analytical best practices.
- Collaborate closely with team members and other Amtrak groups

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, data science, economics, statistics or a related field plus 6 years of relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in engineering, data science, economics, statistics or a related field plus 6 years of relevant work experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Data Analysis Expertise: Proficient in travel demand analysis and forecasting, including experience with survey sampling, data analytics modeling, and multivariate analytical techniques such as conjoint analysis, regression analysis, segmentation, and cluster analysis.
- Programming skills/experience with Python/R, SQL, VB, and/or other languages
- Business Acumen: Ability to connect data insights to business strategy and operational goals.
- Communication: Skilled in presenting complex findings to non-technical audiences and influencing stakeholders.
- Comfort with large amounts of complex data from multiple sources coupled with the ability to see linkages and relationships within and between sources.
- Project Leadership: Capable of managing analysis projects independently and coordinating across teams.
- Collaboration & Mentorship: Works effectively with cross-functional teams and may support development of junior staff.
Preferred
- Experience with visualization tools such as Business Objects, Tableau or similar
- Experience working with network forecasting models (such as TransCAD, Cube/Voyager, and/or other similar packages) and GIS systems (such as ArcView).
- Experience with one or more statistical programming languages (e.g., SAS, Stata, SPSS, R).

- Additional working hours and travel will be required periodically.

The hourly range is $94,300.00 – $135,900.00 (with opportunity for increases, as per the applicable collective bargaining agreement, after beginning employment).
