The Amtrak Scholarship Program provides academic scholarships to undergraduate and graduate college students who have an interest in the railroad industry. How to apply for the 2019 Amtrak Academic Scholarship

For 2019, scholarships will be awarded in three different categories: Engineering, Information Technology, and Business Professional.


Eligibility
To be considered for an Amtrak Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:
  • You must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate bachelor degree program or master degree program
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Be a sophomore or above, with full-time student enrollment
  • Have a minimum of one academic year complete, and have at least one semester left of study after the scholarship is awarded
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Have a demonstrated interest in railroad industry career through co-op, internship or summer employment; academic curriculum or academic railroad project/program; or as a member of railroad student organization/chapter/team/club/group
  • Interest in a possible future Amtrak internship and/or co-op opportunity
Essay Topics
As part of the scholarship application process, you will be required to respond to your choice of one of three topics. You may respond via a written essay (no longer than 500 words), or through a video essay (be as creative as you want, but no longer than five minutes in duration). The topics are:

  1. The Importance of the Rail Industry in America
  2. The Importance of Railway Infrastructure Development
  3. An Important Milestone in Amtrak’s History
Selection criteria
Scholarship candidates will be evaluated on the basis of the above stated criteria and other factors, including interest in the railroad industry, written communication skills, and essay content. Financial need is NOT a consideration in the selection decision.

Financial award
The scholarship amount will range from $1,000 to $5,000. Awarding of the scholarship is contingent on review of academic status, and cumulative GPA review. The scholarship will be awarded prior to the start of the Fall school semester.

Scholarship award must be used for tuition, academic fees, books, and equipment required for classes to attain a college degree from a college or university unless an exception from Amtrak is documented.

In order to retain scholarship payment, student must complete one full academic semester following the award payment date. Failure to do so will require payback of scholarship award.

Deadline
The deadline for submitting an application for the 2019 Scholarship is March 31, 2019. Winners will be notified by August 1, 2019.
