Why did you want to be an intern at Amtrak?
Ever since I was a little kid, I had been riding the train to different destinations from 30th Street Station with my family. So, I’ve always known about the company and its reputation. It fit my major, focus, and I knew it was a great company.
What is the most exciting part about being an Amtrak intern?
I love being able to travel for work all throughout the Northeast Corridor. I feel like every day I get to learn something new or go somewhere new.
What is your favorite part about being an Amtrak intern?
My favorite part about being an Amtrak intern would be the people I’ve met and work with. Everyone was always friendly to me from my first day, and more than willing to teach me new things and answer my questions. This is a large company, and I am only an intern. But it feels like a close group when someone who you had only met once, last year remembers your name.
Have you learned any interesting things during your internship?
Before this internship I had zero knowledge about railroad, so everything I’ve learned has been new and interesting. One of the most interesting things I’ve learned is how to read the rail. I have a great supervisor who has been teaching me what marks on the rail were made by our maintenance machines, trains, or debris. I’ve been able to learn a lot, yet there is still so much for me to learn.
What was one of the more challenging things you've experienced while here?
The railroad worker safety classes were definitely challenging because there was a decent amount of memorizing. However, these facts and rules are extremely important, as safety is a big part of working for Amtrak.
Do you have any advice for someone interested in being an intern at Amtrak?
I would tell them to 100% apply. This company has so much to offer. There are so many hands-on opportunities, different departments to work in, and the employees are friendly. Don’t be afraid to reach out to different people. What you put into this internship is what you will get in return.
What are you career goals? Do you think that your internship here has helped you with those goals?
I plan on getting an engineering job in transportation when I graduate next year. Through these past two internships with Amtrak, I have been able to discover my interest in the railroad.
