Engineering & Mechanical Jobs

Amtrak’s mission is to provide efficient and effective intercity passenger rail mobility consisting of high-quality service that is trip-time competitive with other intercity travel options. The Engineering and Mechanical departments are integral in pursuing this mission, and are critical to the safety of our passengers and employees and the reliability of the service we provide. We do this while ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies and Amtrak standards of excellence.

Mechanical employees are responsible for inspection, testing, maintenance, repair and overhaul of more than 2,000 passenger cars, locomotives, and switch engines. Members of the mechanical team work to enhance the customer experience by creating and implementing an efficient maintenance program that consistently provides safe, clean and reliable passenger rolling stock equipment and components that comply with various regulatory and Amtrak maintenance and quality standards.

Job opportunities in the mechanical workforce encompass a full range of mechanical crafts including electricians, machinists, car repair and sheet metal workers, laborers, as well as leadership positions in three major back shops and 12 terminals and maintenance yards throughout the country.

Be part of an Engineering team that plans, designs, constructs, operates and maintains the only high-speed railroad in North America. Not unlike many roles at Amtrak, our Engineering team is critical to the safety of our passengers and employees, and the reliability of the service we provide. We do this while ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies and Amtrak standards and guidelines.

Career opportunities in our engineering workforce encompass a full range of engineering crafts including lineman, helpers (communications and Signals trainees), trackmen, substation electricians, and bridges and building (B&B) mechanics, as well as many leadership positions across America.

Amtrak is a 24/7 operation, and Mechanical and Engineering employees work various shifts (including nights, weekends, and holidays).  Our business never sleeps.
