Laborer / Skilled Trades

Laborers and tradespeople are an integral part of Amtrak’s workforce as part of our Mechanical and Engineering teams. Your skills are critical to the safety of our passengers and employees and the reliability of the service we provide.

Mechanical employees are responsible for inspection, testing, maintenance, repair and overhaul of more than 2,000 passenger cars, locomotives, and switch engines. Members of the mechanical team work to enhance the customer experience by creating and implementing an efficient maintenance program that consistently provides safe, clean and reliable passenger rolling stock equipment and components that comply with various regulatory and Amtrak maintenance and quality standards.

Job opportunities in the mechanical workforce encompass a full range of mechanical crafts including electricians, machinists, car repair and sheet metal workers, fuel truck drivers, motor equipment operators, and boilermakers/welders in three major back shops and 12 terminals and maintenance yards throughout the United States.

Engineering employees are part of a team that plans, designs, constructs, operates and maintains the only high-speed railroad in North America. These projects are mission critical to the safety of our passengers and employees, and the reliability of the service we provide.

Career opportunities in our engineering workforce encompass a full range of engineering crafts including lineman, helpers (communications and Signals trainees), trackmen, substation electricians, and bridges and building (B&B) mechanics, and more.

Amtrak is a 24/7 operation, and mechanical and engineering employees work various shifts (including nights, weekends, and holidays). Our business never sleeps.
