The Program Specialist, Sustainability will assist in leading the execution of Amtrak’s Sustainability and Climate Resilience program and goals. The Program Specialist will use their knowledge of sustainability issues, corporate social responsibility reporting frameworks, and compelling writing to help Amtrak build its reputation by delivering smart sustainability content through thoughtful reporting, messaging, and other deliverables. Annual reporting responsibilities include development and publication of the annual Sustainability report and CDP. The role is responsible for managing ongoing editorial leadership on key platforms such as, Amtrak’s intranet sustainability page, and supporting requests from internal partners including Government Affairs, Marketing, and Corporate Communications. The role must ensure all speaking points, posts, and other forms of sustainability-related communications are technically correct. The role must closely manage multiple projects and writing assignments simultaneously, while responding promptly to time-sensitive requests to review and fact-check executive briefings, social media posts, press releases, etc. The Program Specialist will compile, assess, and analyze internal and external sustainability messaging and data for reports and communications.


• Draft and oversee publication of Amtrak’s annual Sustainability Report and response to CDP
• Manage content development on various Amtrak-owned platforms such as, Amtrak’s internal All Aboard sustainability page.
• Support internal and external messaging in collaboration with other departments such as Government Affairs, Marketing, and Corporate Communications.
• Ensure all sustainability reference documents, used by other departments, are current, accurate and statistically correct.
• Work across departments and within the Environment & Sustainability team to gather salient details in response to internal or external communications requests. 


• Minimum of 3 years relevant experience required (minimum of 7 years relevant experience in lieu of degree).
• Bachelor’s Degree required in Communications, English, or a similar degree with relevant sustainability or climate experience OR equivalent combination of training, education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
• Experience with sustainability and climate change topics such as greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, and climate resiliency.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to respond promptly to time-sensitive requests to review and fact-check executive briefings, social media posts, press releases, responses to customer inquiries, etc.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Proven ability to describe technical or scientific topics to various audiences with limited understanding of sustainability or climate change.
• Proven ability to balance multiple assignments and competing priorities.
• Experienced individual contributor, able to work independently and as part of a high-performing team.
• Demonstrated skills using PC-based spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel, Access); Microsoft Word, PowerPoint.


• 2 or more years of relevant business communications experience preferred.
• Ability to thrive in environments with ambiguity and uncertainty
• Ability to demonstrate exemplary personal judgment given sensitive content

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
