As America’s railroad, we serve diverse communities, and our talent pool reflects the communities we serve. With the historic infrastructure law (IIJA), we can make transformational investments to not only upgrade trains, stations and infrastructure—but to hire people to bring rail to millions more Americans.
We are people on the move
We want Amtrak to be a workplace where everyone can feel welcomed, included and valued. This inclusive culture is foundational to our Amtrak Values. Our comprehensive diversity and inclusion strategy for recruiting, welcoming and onboarding, engaging, developing and promoting apply to all Amtrak employees including, people of color, women, people with disabilities, veterans and the LGBTQIA+ community across all generations.

Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging at Amtrak
Amtrak is proud of our diverse workforce. As we begin our next 50-years and beyond, we commit to advance an environment where diverse backgrounds, experiences and ideas are welcome, heard, and respected. We empower our people and strengthen our culture to be an organization reflective of our customers and the communities we serve. By building upon and leveraging our diversity, fostering inclusion and creating a workplace that produces a sense of belonging for all employees we continue to become the preferred, safest provider of intercity passenger transportation in the country.
Our employees regularly attend and speak at events supporting diversity in transportation, engineering, and more.
Because the community impacts us in so many ways, we find it only natural to want to give back. Whether it’s hosting a community job fair or conducting a local blood drive, Amtrak continuously cultivates relationships with a variety of organizations including schools, community agencies, sport affiliations, the military and other professional organizations that specialize in targeting various demographics and diverse communities.
Amtrak’s Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are groups of employees who join together based on shared characteristics, interests or life experiences. ERGs are voluntary, independent of any department and are led by employees, for employees. ERGs provide friendship, career and personal development and cultivate a diverse inclusive workplace aligned to Amtrak’s vision, mission and values. ERGs are how we connect, contribute, and build community.
Beyond Culture, Ethnicity, Age or Gender
To continue attracting, growing and building our diverse workforce, we’re committed to cultivating an inclusive environment with hiring practices that position ourselves for the future:
Our hiring practices require anyone at Amtrak who sits on an interview panel to take unconscious bias training before participating in the hiring process.
We’re also taking a proactive stance on creating diverse candidate pools and diverse interviewing panels and teams.
We are improving our approach to promotions, career development and succession planning to ensure we are operating inclusively.
We Must Move Together
At Amtrak, we treat one another with dignity and respect, and we see a future filled with new opportunities, new adventures and new challenges. We strive to provide a work environment where employees with disabilities have an equal opportunity to contribute and succeed. We support and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended, and Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act 1973 providing accommodations for employees with medical conditions or physical or mental limitations to enable them to perform the essential functions of their jobs. We also provide accommodations for applicants who need assistance with the application or interviewing processes.
With this policy, we aim to create an elevated awareness of the company's commitment to accommodate persons with disabilities and to provide additional procedural guidance to employees who seek a workplace accommodation.
