As we continue to hire for roles across Amtrak, we are dedicated to keeping our candidates and employees safe by transitioning to virtual interviews where appropriate. Interviewing virtually may be new for you, so we’ve put together these recommendations to ensure you are confident and comfortable. Review the below tips to prepare for your virtual interview with Amtrak.
Prepare yourself and your surroundings
- Dress professionally and appropriately for the interview.
- Familiarize yourself with the video conferencing software and do a test connection with a friend prior to your interview.
- Pick a quiet well-lit place to interview with a simple background. Allow yourself to be the focal point on the screen.
- Make sure your device is stationary. If possible, position the device at eye level so you can sit up in a naturally confident position.
- Ensure the space in view of the camera is organized and clean
- Close all other windows and tabs on your device, especially those that make sounds
- Silence your phone but keep it nearby; if technical issues arise that prevent you from continuing the interview in a virtual format, the manager may call your phone directly to finish the interview.
- Ensure that your camera is showing only your shoulders and head.
- Ensure that the image is zoomed out appropriately to see your entire head.
Make your best impression
- Join your interview session 5 minutes (or less) prior to your scheduled start time.
- Keep in mind: first impressions are just as important in a virtual setting:
- If panel members are in the meeting when you join, please briefly introduce yourself; formal introductions will take place once the interview begins.
- If you are the first person to join the interview meeting, please wait patiently for the panel members to join the session.
- Use positive, engaging body language and non-verbal cues such as:
- Maintaining engaged posture.
- Occasional head nods and other non-verbal cues to show interest.
- Looking directly at the camera when talking to maintain eye contact with your interviewers.
- Speak clearly and confidently.
- Prepare thoughtful questions for your interviewers.
- Remain seated; it is best not to stand or move around during the interview.
