SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

The Trainmaster ensures safe and efficient train make-up, road and terminal operations, and management of train and engine service employees.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Oversight of the operation in connection with the Road Foremen, to ensure optimum safety, customer service and on-time performance in compliance with all federal, state, local and Amtrak rules and regulations. 
• Ensure all bulletins equipment; postings, etc. adhere to labor, federal and Amtrak regulations. 
• Ensures employees comply with federal rules and regulations and Amtrak and MTA policies and operating practices. 
• Initiates action for non-compliance in a fair and consistent manner. 
• Manage employees (to include crew bases at times) and train operations to optimize on-time performance and recommend ideas on how to improve performance. 
• Responds to service disruptions in area of responsibility and handle promptly to minimize passenger inconvenience and train delays. 
• Provides written and oral reports as required. 
• Interview, select and manage new-hire train service crews and ensure employees receive proper training and support. 
• Conduct efficiency tests and ensure compliance with all Amtrak and federal operating requirements. 
• Implement safety plans. 
• Manage crew base budget for train service crews. 
• Conduct train service crew revenue audits

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School diploma
• Prior satisfactory work experience in train or passenger service.
• Five years experience as a train service crew member or Train Director/Dispatcher.
• Qualified on physical characteristics of territory. 
• Demonstrated business and financial management experience.
• Demonstrated knowledge of CFR 49 requirements and labor contracts (BLE, UTU and TCU).  
• Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills. 
• Working knowledge of Amtrak policies and procedures (NORAC, AMT-2, AMT-3)

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelors Degree in Transportation, Business or related field or equivalent work experience, training, and/or education.
• Five years supervisory experience, leading and managing others with different levels of expertise
• Five years experience with train operation, crew base, crew management, operations, train handling and service delivery
• Ability to develop and manage an operating budget
• Qualified Passenger Conductor

 

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
