This position is a tiered position. Incumbents will have a position level assigned based on their skills and experience, and in alignment with position development plans. Position placement is at Amtrak’s sole and absolute discretion.



The Mechanical Engineer provides technical assistance to the backshops and terminals, and internal Amtrak departments as required for mechanical and structural locomotive and passenger systems.  The Engineer reviews contractor and internal designs for suitability and compliance with requirements and technical specifications. The Mechanical Engineer oversees the rolling stock equipment and develops engineering programs and processes to improve the quality and reliability of the equipment.

  • Leads and manages air brake projects and analysis by utilizing available resources and team support to develop specifications and technical procedures for passenger rail equipment systems to ensure reliable, safe and functional operations.  
  • Leveraging mechanical engineering principles, provides engineering solutions that extend beyond routine troubleshooting and routine diagnostic work.
  • Approves OEM initiated mechanical engineering solutions to material problems, alternate materials, obsolescence, and continuous improvement change drivers.
  • Leads the development of Amtrak initiated solutions for problems on passenger and freight air brake equipment systems.  
  • Provides design improvements related to air brake problems which are typically design flaws, retrofit and field modifications, and maintenance shortcomings.
  • Understands the Return on Investment of design improvements to reduce failures and to increase availability of equipment.
  • Participates in field tests, safety inspections, and warranty programs for rolling stock programs



  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in Amtrak or Class 1 railway rolling stock maintenance in technical roles involving inspections, commissioning new rolling stock, troubleshooting, and turnaround servicing.  The experience should include equipment maintenance, sanitary systems, power doors, and HVAC, or equivalent experience in another industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in railway air brake systems and components
  • Ability to read and understand air brake schematics and mechanical drawings for troubleshooting.
  • Ability to independently resolve technical problems and be proficient in technical correspondence, including drawings.
  • Knowledge of air brake systems including 26L, 26C, CCBI, CCBII, Fastbrake and freight air brakes, and how they are integrated with all the other systems as well as their impact on the entire functionality of cars and locomotives. 
  • Knowledge of Positive Train Control (PTC) systems and how they integrate with the various air brake systems.
  • Knowledgeable in areas of North American railway safety and regulatory practices including but not limited to AAR,  FRA, APTA and Transport Canadian rules.
  • Must have general knowledge of ASME standards.
  • Elementary knowledge of environmental regulations, signal rules, electric traction, NORAC rules related to train operations and physical features of the right of ways.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Capable of effectively working with Legal Professionals and craft personnel.
  • Strong project management and analysis skills.
  • Basic computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft computer software such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point and Projects.
  • Ability to master digital photography.
  • Capable of developing and implementing Mechanical procedures Modifications, SMP’s and Maintenance Bulletins and Alerts as well as work station specifications.


• MS degree in Mechanical engineering discipline or PE license.
• Working knowledge of the CFR-238 and basic qualifications. 
• Significant engineering experience with a railroad or other technical agency.
• Familiarity with UIC standards applicable to railway equipment.
• Membership in an AAR, ASME, SAE, ASHRAE technical society.
• Certified in Project Management.
• Certified for handling refrigerant gases and successfully complete Amtrak’s HVAC repair training.  
• Working knowledge of Amtrak WMS system.
• General understanding of materials management functions and creation of Bills of Materials and material inventory changes. 

Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
