Job Summary

The Trainmaster ensures safe and efficient train operations and management of train and engine service employees in the Denver, CO Crew Base.

 

This position is a tiered position. Incumbents will have a position level assigned based on their skills and experience, and in alignment with position development plans. Position placement is at Amtrak’s sole and absolute discretion.

Essential Functions

  • Oversight of the operation in connection with the Road Foremen, to ensure optimum safety, customer service, and on-time performance in compliance with all federal, state, local, and Amtrak rules and regulations.
  • Ensure all bulletins equipment; postings, etc. adhere to labor, federal and Amtrak regulations.
  • Ensures employees comply with federal rules and regulations and Amtrak policies and operating practices.
  • Manage employees and train operations to optimize on-time performance and recommend ideas on how to improve performance.
  • Responds to service disruptions in areas of responsibility and handle them promptly to minimize passenger inconvenience and train delays.
  • Interview, select, and manage new-hire train service crews and ensure employees receive proper training and support.
  • Conduct efficiency tests and ensure compliance with all Amtrak and federal operating requirements.
  • Manage crew base budget for train service crews.
  • Conduct train service crew revenue audits
  • Constantly works in a fast-paced time-sensitive environment with frequently changing priorities
  • Frequently resolves problems with conflicting priorities in cognitively demanding situations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma
  • Prior satisfactory work experience in train or passenger service.
  • 3+ years experience as a train service crewmember, Passenger Conductor or Engineer
  • Must be willing to become qualified on physical characteristics of the territory.
  • Demonstrated business and financial management experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CFR 49 requirements and labor contracts (BLE, UTU, and TCU).
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Working knowledge of Amtrak policies and procedures
  • Applicants for this position will be expected to lift 50 lbs and meet the criteria for vision, color vision, and hearing set forth by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) in 49 CFR 242. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Transportation, Business or related field or equivalent work experience, training, and/or education.
  • 5 years’ experience as a train service crewmember or Passenger Conductor
  • Five years of supervisory experience, leading and managing others with different levels of expertise
  • Five years’ experience with train operation, crew base, crew management, operations, train handling and service delivery
  • Ability to develop and manage an operating budget

 

Work Environment

  • Spends approximately 25% of work time in an office setting, utilizing a computer, keyboard, monitor, and mouse to complete various administrative and operational tasks
  • Spends approximately 75% of work time in an outdoor railroad operating environment, which includes walking on uneven surfaces and performing physical activities such as reaching, bending, and stretching to board and detrain equipment
  • Regularly works extended hours as operational needs require, including being on-call and available to respond to emergencies
  • Is considered on duty at all times and must remain available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends and holidays
  • Frequently operates in high-pressure or crisis situations, requiring timely decision-making based on limited or incomplete information
  • Frequently works outdoors and is exposed to varying and adverse weather conditions
  • Regularly resolves complex problems involving competing priorities in cognitively demanding situations
  • Consistently works in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment with shifting priorities
  • Often manages multiple projects simultaneously
  • Subject to travel, sometimes with minimal notice due to service disruptions

The salary for Trainmaster I is $114,000 - $119,000 and the salary for Trainmaster II is $124,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
