SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

This position is responsible to provide engineering for projects and studies required to repair, rehabilitate or construct communications and train control facilities and systems. This position is responsible to generate and review hardware and software design and commissioning plans for train control systems, develop train control design standard procedures and practices, create and review contract documents, and participate in design, construction and commissioning planning and review meetings. This position is responsible to maintain configuration control of train control assets, hardware and software designs. This position provides technical expertise to other departments and makes engineering decisions for the C&S Department and their staff upon request.

 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Must be capable of developing solutions to individual train control design problems.
  • Maintains documentation of all comments regarding of design plans, both internal and external.
  • Assist field personnel in handling problems encountered during train control cutovers and is responsible to make revisions to design plans to reflect as-in-service changes or modifications.
  • Assists field personnel in performing quality control pre-testing on train control systems.
  • Attends cut-overs and assists in the development of these procedures.
  • Ensures train control design files, databases, software, etc. are current and properly maintained.

 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Demonstrate experience in train control design, technical supervision, technical design, design software, project management, railroad maintenance and construction methods and planning / scheduling.
  • Strong working knowledge of railroad signal circuit plan symbols, nomenclature and circuit logic.
  • Working knowledge of railroad circuit design as applied in signal systems.
  • Knowledge of C&S equipment (microprocessors, relay, batteries, etc.)
  • Knowledge of mathematics and Boolean algebra as it applies to train control processor or relay logic.
  • Knowledge of Amtrak’s interlocking layouts and physical characteristics.
  • Knowledge of FRA standards, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of software system design concepts and processes.
  • Prior satisfactory job performance is required.

 


MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated experience in communication orally and in writing within and outside of the organization.
  • Ability to communicate with field personnel to ensure accuracy of signal system designs on file.
  • Ability to shift priorities at short notice

  • Knowledge of Federal regulations and directives

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Three years relevant experience or seven years equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Extensive experience in writing and checking railroad train control software programs.
  • Extensive field knowledge of train control construction and maintenance practices.
  • Experience using Bentley Microstation Applications.
  • Qualified on NORAC, AMT-2 and RWP

  

WORK ENVRIORNMENT:

  • Combination of office and field work. Must be able to work in the field under all weather conditions.
  • 3 days in the office, 2 days remote
  • Travel: (25%).

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

 

 

The salary/hourly range is $103,700-$134,460. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
