Lineman Trainees are responsible for the construction, maintenance, and installation of high voltage transmission, catenary, and signal transmission systems.



. Duties include attaching appurtenances, relocate lines away from existing lines, shift poles requiring new foundations, install anchors and foundations, shift under traffic, move poles with wires attached, splice existing appurtenances, and install new foundations and certain designated power lines and signal transmission systems.



. Must be a minimum of 18 years of age and a high school graduate or GED equivalent.
. Must have a minimum of 2 years' experience in heavy physical labor.
. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license on the date of hire.
. Must be able to obtain CDL license within 90 days of hire date.
. Applicants must be able to perform basic mathematical computations including fractions and decimals.
. Ability to pass required training with written exams including two weeks of safety training and required department training modules over a 24-month period to progress to qualified lineman.
. Must read, write, & speak the English language clearly and have the ability to communicate using telephone and radio.


. Basic climbing, rigging, and lineman experience is a plus.
. Basic mechanical aptitude and knowledge of hand tools.
. Electronic/electrical background or education is a plus.
. Previous electric traction railroad experience preferred.


. Applicants must be able and willing to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify safety risks and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations.



Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.


Construct, install, and maintain test substation switching apparatus, control cables and associated batteries. Operates substation and protects contractors, workman and work equipment in proximity of high-tension lines or apparatus.



. Must pass satisfactory examinations in accordance with Electric Traction Training Agreement.
. Must maintain 80% average (exception- hiring at class “A” status).
. Must demonstrate ability to climb and work 100 feet in the air within the first 90 days of employment as a condition of employment.
. Must have prior satisfactory work attendance record, work performance, and safety record.
. Must read, write, and speak the English language clearly, with the ability to communicate using telephones and radios.
. Will be placed in a training program and must excel through all stages of training.
. The ability to respond to railroad concerns on a 24 hr basis.
. Other duties as assigned.


. Must be a licensed Electrician
. Basic electrical theory, knowledge coupled with the desire and ability to learn.
. Must have a current valid driver’s license at hiring or transfer and must have or obtain valid Commercial Driver’s license within first 90 days of the training program.  Both licenses’ must be maintained throughout employment.
. Must be able to understand, speak, and write the English language fluently.


. Experience as an electrician or lineman with knowledge of tools, rigging, electricity and safety procedures.
. Basic Electrical theory, knowledge of electrical components and use of various electrical testing devices.
. Climbing and rigging experience.
. Formal electrical training
Must have excellent oral and written communication skill


The hourly rate is $37.66-$41.07 (with opportunity for increases, as per the applicable collective bargaining agreement, after beginning employment).
