This position is a tiered position. Incumbents will have a position level assigned based on their skills and experience, and in alignment with position development plans. Position placement is at Amtrak’s sole and absolute discretion.

 

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

The Service Engineer I/II supports rolling stock equipment and develops engineering programs and processes to implement and improve the quality and reliability of equipment across the Amtrak system. The Service Engineer II reports to the Mechanical Rolling Stock Equipment department while solving advanced technical problems, owning interdisciplinary efforts with Amtrak, state rolling stock and host railroads as a subject matter expert, and communicating with resources both internally and externally to meet business objectives.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide advanced field and technical assistance to terminals, transportation, mechanical department, and maintenance facilities.
  • Perform digital monitoring and analytics on fleetwide performance in consultation with key vendors to identify corrective actions
  • Lead in-depth troubleshooting and development of solution packages that extend beyond routine diagnostic work.
  • Develop and review technical specifications, parts, modifications, campaigns, and procedures for equipment and systems for both Amtrak and state rolling stock equipment.
  • Support authorizing component upgrades, updates, and replacements, including qualifying vendors and products with engineering documentation and drawings reviews as necessary.
  • Work with Fleet Managers to provide design and procedure improvements related to equipment problems which are typically design flaws, retrofit and field modifications, and maintenance shortcomings.
  • Provide engineering expertise, technical support, testing and design improvements to investigate systemic problems, reduce failures, and increase availability of equipment
  • Participate in field tests, safety inspections, and warranty programs for both Amtrak and state rolling stock equipment.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS degree in an engineering discipline or BS degree and engineering work experience.
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical, electronic and/or mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems using computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Experience/ability to read schematics and interpret technical documents and instructions.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills, including experience defining problems, collecting data, and drawing valid conclusions.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2-5 years of relevant work experience.
  • MS degree in an engineering discipline or PE license.
  • Working knowledge of the 49CFR229, 236, 238, and basic qualifications.
  • Significant engineering experience with a railroad or other technically similar agency.
  • Experience with database management and/or analytics 
  • General understanding of materials management functions and creation of Bills of Materials and material inventory changes.
  • Demonstrated experience in Amtrak or Class 1 railway rolling stock maintenance in technical roles involving inspections, commissioning new rolling stock, and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of train control regulations, signal rules, operating rules related to train operations, and physical features of the right of way.
  • Demonstrated experience in railway quality control
