POSITION SUMMARY:
The Intern of Capital Construction is responsible for assisting in the management and oversight of Capital Construction, Program Work, and I&C (Individual & Companies) Projects within the NY Portfolio of Capital Construction. The Intern of Capital Construction reports to a Manager of Capital Construction for the New York Portfolio. This position will be Amtrak’s on-site representative during the construction phase of projects and work directly with field supervisors and contractors. This position will liaise with contractors, design consultants, and clients to ensure construction activities support project requirements. The general duties of this position will be to assist the NY Portfolio in constructing a project by specifications and to monitor/report on production metrics that provide the required data to help the project meet its established scope, schedule, and budget. This position involves a combination of office and field environments. This position is subject to response work under all weather conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Attends project site walks with contractors and various Amtrak department personnel.
- Assists in constructability reviews of design plans and all construction phase submittals associated with Projects.
- Assists with force account estimates and project estimates and schedules.
- Assists Project Managers to ensure projects are executed by the agreed-upon scopes, costs, and schedules.
- Review daily production reports.
- Assists with weekly updates to the Project Managers on the status of Projects, including any issues that occurred.
- Assists with formal monthly project status reports addressing actuals and forecast costs and schedules, change of status, to the Program Managers of the projects and programs.
- Attends progress meetings and reports on project status.
- Work with Project Managers to review requests for change from the field and, if appropriate, prepare a potential change notice with appropriate justification for submission to PM.
- Assists with the preparation and reviews of the Safety Site Specific Work Plan (SWAP) to ensure the safety of the jobs.
- Reviews contractors’ design submittals and works with the system office and NY Division ADEs
- Maintains, supports, and promotes a safe work environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
- Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate/graduate degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or another related field.
- Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum.
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.
The hourly range is $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc. In addition, paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
Summer 2025 internship program will run from May 19th - August 8, 2025.
