Rate of Pay:
Per IBEW Union Agreement - Amtrak Electronic Technician (Radio):

  • Technician I with FCC GROL
  • Technician II without FCC GROL starts at lower rate. Can progress to Technician I by obtaining FCC GROL (FCC GROL needed for maintaining marine equipment, etc.



  • Installing and maintain wayside radio equipment for voice communications for train operations, engineering forces, and Amtrak police
  • Installing and maintaining wayside PTC equipment
  • Installing mobile radios in various vehicle and track equipment
  • Programming and issuing portable and mobile radios
  • Maintaining radio equipment shelters
  • Repairing locomotive train radios (some shops)
  • Repairing PTC train equipment (some shops)
  • Need to work in variety of weather conditions
  • Need to respond to changing priorities
  • Other duties as assigned



  • 2 week New Hire camp (new employees only)
  • Yearly safety training
  • On the job training



  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Be comfortable working at heights, including tower/pole climbing
  • Be able to carry at least 25 lbs for moderate lengths of time
  • Preferred: Proficient with using computers and networking equipment
  • Preferred: Previous experience using bucket trucks and manlifts


Work Hours:

  • 1st Shift – Overtime offered


  • Need to pass radio engineering evaluation exam with at least 70% and have a satisfactory interview
