This role is being created to support a multi-year transformational project at Amtrak, as support for normal department operations. As this position is tied to that project work, continuation of work after completion of the project would depend on business needs at that time.
Job Summary
Lead, manage, and perform advanced cost accounting activities, supporting inventory and overhead accounting processes, and ensuring compliance with company policies and GAAP. Prepare and upload journal entries, complete reconciliations, analyze cost data, and provide critical insights to support operational and financial decision-making. Partner closely with cross-functional teams and lead or assist in a variety of ad-hoc projects.
Essential Functions
- Prepare and upload journal entries related to inventory and overhead accounting activities
- Prepare various inventory and overhead-related reconciliations, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely resolution of disputes
- Monitor inventory transactions processed in the field to ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Prepare, analyze, and interpret inventory and overhead reports, providing insight into variances and trends
- Support month-end and year-end close processes for inventory and overhead accounting
- Analyze direct labor, overhead, and material costs to facilitate accurate quarterly adjustments
- Support annual budget development and periodic overhead forecasts
- Develop, document, and enhance processes related to cost accounting, inventory controls, and overhead allocations
- Lead or assist with ad-hoc requests and special projects for inventory and overhead accounting teams
- Collaborate with Operations, Supply Chain, Finance, Internal Audit, and external auditors to ensure proper accounting treatment, support audit activities, and drive continuous improvement of cost accounting processes
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
- Plus 7 years of relevant work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
- Plus 9 years of relevant work experience.
- Strong working knowledge of SAP and other Amtrak applications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong working knowledge of Excel and other Microsoft Office applications
- Strong analytical capability and the capacity to control system data in accordance with corporate policies and procedures
- Ability to collect, organize, and analyze qualitative and quantitative data
- Ability to clearly describe or explain information, concepts, ideas, and instructions
- Strong comprehension skills to learn various business processes and quickly grasp new concepts, approaches, and systems

The salary/hourly range is $113,200.00 – $146,664.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
