This entry level Associate Electrical Engineer – Train Control Design role will be part of the Engineering Department with a focus on train control design projects. Assists experienced engineers in developing studies, plans, criteria, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, performance assessments, integrated systems analysis, cost estimates, budgets, associated with the planning, design, licensing, construction, operation, and maintenance of Amtrak’s train control operations. Provides analytical support for consultation and recommendations to the Engineering department by studying systems, processes, equipment, vehicles or facilities, as it relates to the railroad train control system. 


• Assists in reviews of engineering designs prepared by outside consultants for projects to be constructed on Amtrak property to ensure compliance with industry and Amtrak standards
• Assists experienced engineers in planning, design/construction, scheduling, and cost estimation of train control design projects
• Maintains documentation of all comments regarding of design plans, both internal and external.
• Assist field personnel in handling problems encountered during train control cutovers and is responsible to make revisions to design plans to reflect as-in-service changes or modifications.
• Assists field personnel in performing quality control pre-testing on train control systems.
• Attends cut-overs and assists in the development of these procedures.
• Ensures train control design files, databases, software, etc. are current and properly maintained.


• Bachelor’s Degree required OR equivalent combination of training, education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
• Knowledge of engineering designs, principles and practices

• Must be computer literate and capable of writing computer programs or spreadsheet programs to streamline design time efficiency
• Limited knowledge and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, and practices necessary to perform routine assignments for a specific discipline installation, or service.


•  Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.

•  2+ years of relevant experience preferred. 

•  Demonstrated interest or competency in the railroad industry

• Previous industry experience (internships, co-op, professional)
• Demonstrated experience in train control design/construction
• Demonstrated experience in Drafting tools, such as Microstation
• Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks
• Engineering in Training (EIT) Certification
• Master’s Degree in Engineering


Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
