Job Summary

Seeking a motivated Junior Software Engineer with a solid foundation in software development principles and hands‑on experience through internships or academic projects. The ideal candidate is eager to learn and work with specialized technologies used in Control Systems, including HPE NonStop platforms. This role involves supporting critical 24/7 rail‑operations systems and requires strong analytical skills, adaptability, and a willingness to work within unique and highly reliable system environments.

Essential Functions

  • Strong understanding of computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and operating systems.
  • Internship experience or equivalent academic project experience in software development.
  • Willingness to learn and work with technologies used in Control Systems (e.g., HPE NonStop systems).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product owners, technical leads, project managers, and business analysts, to design, develop, configure, modify, and integrate software solutions.
  • Develop, test, and maintain software components supporting Control Systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues in production and test environments.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and system specialists to learn specialized technologies used within Amtrak’s Control Systems.
  • Participate in release deployments and system upgrades across all Control System sites.
  • Provide on‑call or scheduled support coverage for 24/7 operations as required.
  • Document processes, code changes, system behavior, and configuration details.
  • Provide ongoing maintenance and support for applications, document changes and test results, and create user guides and training documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
  • Willingness to learn and work with technologies used in Control Systems (e.g., HPE NonStop systems).
  • Ability to support a 24/7 operational environment, including occasional night and weekend work.
  • Familiarity with software development in real‑time, mission‑critical, or highly reliable system environments. 
  • Work will be performed onsite in Philadelphia, PA.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience. 
  • A Master’s degree in Computer Engineering/Science may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
  • Plus 2 year of relevant work experience.
  • Experience working within transportation, industrial control, or safety‑critical systems.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% as needed.
     

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated understanding of Information Technology, including experience in application/system support
  • Relational database experience (Structured Query Language Server)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the full IT development lifecycle and familiar with Agile/Scrum development environment
  • Ability to quickly learn and understand complex applications and technologies

Environmental Conditions/Physical Demands

The salary/hourly range is $72,000.00 – $93,312.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
