Job Summary

The Lead Accountant will provide technical accounting support to the Amtrak business areas by preparing, reviewing, and approving month-end accruals and journal entries. The role works closely with other departments and project managers to ensure proper processing of invoices and recording of expenses. The Lead Accountant reconciles accrual and payable general ledger accounts. Produces detailed reports to support general ledger balances and performs analysis to explain flux and variances in material liability accounts. The Lead Accountant provides support for internal and external audit inquiries. Develop policy and procedures to address audit recommendations (if required).

Essential Functions

  • Collaboration with finance and related departments for monthly close accruals
  • Managing customer relationships with Amtrak departments, internal and external auditors
  • Prepare and review monthly journal entries
  • Perform accurate and timely reconciliation of general ledger accounts
  • Perform variance/flux analysis to support month-end close and other reporting
  • Support year-end and interim audits
  • Adhoc reporting and projects
  • Recommend policies and procedures to support all areas of responsibility

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience
  • Plus 6 years of relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
  • Plus 8 years of relevant work experience
  • Extensive knowledge of US GAAP accounting

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Detailed Oriented
  • Strong organizational and project management skills and the ability to work efficiently and independently, meeting critical deadlines
  • Demonstrated proficiency in performing financial analysis and reconciliations, as well as presenting data in a summarized and understandable format
  • Ability to comprehend various business processes and quickly grasp new concepts and systems
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Demonstrated skills using computer-based spreadsheets and MS Office applications
  • Working knowledge of SAP financial systems

The salary/hourly range is $94,300.00 – $122,256.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
