Job Summary
Members of Amtrak's Business Improvement & Analytics (BIA) team are leaders in formulating and executing business strategies, high-impact strategic solutions, and continuous improvement. BIA drives value creation by supporting functional Procurement & Supply Chain teams and greater departmental strategies by ensuring efficiency & excellence in execution of those strategies.
The Lead Business Analyst is responsible for driving the development and adoption of business intelligence, advanced analytics, and reporting solutions while supporting data cleansing and system integration initiatives. This role leads complex problem-solving efforts, identifies operational issues, executes performance improvement projects that deliver measurable business impact, manages multiple workstreams, and collaborates cross-functionally to analyze data and deliver executive-level insights and recommendations.
The role supports key Procurement & Supply Chain initiatives, including supplier performance, spend analytics, cost savings, and performance reporting, enabling informed decision-making and operational excellence.
Essential Functions
- Support department requests through technical development (SQL queries, data source creation, etc.) and implementing accompanying procedures/methods and solutions.
- Use advanced quantitative methods to understand, identify trends, predict, and enhance Supply Chain & Procurement processes for key strategic initiatives.
- Collaborate with colleagues in IT functions and subject matter experts in Procurement & Supply Chain on functional business requirements to support performance goals.
- Create and facilitate financial and performance processes and reporting used by working teams to manage performance efforts that align with department and corporate strategy and key performance metrics (KPIs).
- Lead and collaborate with working teams and senior management to implement reporting solutions and systems that impact strategic initiatives.
- Recommend and facilitate business improvement opportunities through improved end-to-end process design and management to enhance performance, drive efficiencies, and reduce costs.
- Assemble data, develop SQL queries and procedures, create custom reports using Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) sources
- Integrate database and write optimized SQL queries for applications and business intelligence reporting (mainly Tableau).
- Produce data mapping from source to target database schemas, data cleansing, processing, writing data extract scripts for data conversion, and researching complex data problems.
- Create program views, complex functions and stored procedures, analyze queries, and resolve problems. Design relational databases and write code that interacts with stored data to complete functional business requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Business Analytics, Computer Science, Statistics, Business Administration, or related field required and/or equivalent combination of training, education and relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- 6+ years relevant work experience and progressive responsibility for data analysis, reporting, business analytics and business process implementation in Procurement and/or Finance; or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or work experience.
- Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
- Expert knowledge of data visualization software such as Tableau.
- Proven experience with programming for data analysis, statistics and databases.
- Strong communication skills (oral and written).
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Prior satisfactory job performance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree and certified courses in Business Analytics, SQL, Continuous Improvement, Lean Six Sigma, and/or Project Management.
- 8+ years of relevant work experience and progressive responsibility in Business Analytics role.
- Exceptional data analytical skills, proficiency in SQL, Excel, and statistics.
- Proven experience with SAP ECC, SAP S4HANA, and Ariba on Demand.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Proven experience in organizations with multi-functional departments and cross-functional work teams.
- Development/programmer skills with Tableau (or similar analytical/visualization tool).
- Expert knowledge of Supply Chain and Procurement data, systems, and best practices.
- Transportation industry experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong data analysis skills including data mapping, data cleansing, processing, and researching complex data problems, and reporting skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment with frequently changing priorities and produce successful deliverables within tight deadlines.
- Advanced expert knowledge/proficiency in SQL and Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Comfortable analyzing and manipulating large data sets (including data mining) and ability to report on/communicate findings to leadership and/or internal customers.
- High attention to detail and organizational aptitude.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced role and can learn new concepts and systems quickly.
- Experience with SAP and Ariba on Demand systems.
- Working knowledge of Tableau (or similar analytical/visualization tool), and general project management skill
Work Environment
- Utilizes computer keyboard and monitor to perform a variety of tasks
- Climate-controlled office environment. Performs tasks that require sitting, standing and/or walking.
The salary/hourly range is $94,300.00 – $122,256.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
