SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The primary goal of this position is to provide safe and reliable Positive Train Control (PTC) systems. This position provides engineering expertise and is responsible for complex projects and studies required to design, implement, and maintain Amtrak’s PTC systems, primarily I-ETMS & ITCS. This position provides technical expertise to other departments and makes engineering decisions for the C&S Department and their staff upon request. The Senior Engineer participates in the development of standard procedures and practices to be used in PTC design and maintenance. Participates in the development of contract documents used in the design and maintenance of PTC. This position is responsible for design of and updates to subdivision files, track databases, wayside interface units, interface control documents, and PTC system designs to ensure compliance with regulatory and Amtrak standards and policies. Participates in project design meeting, reviews SOWs, and provides detailed comments.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Coordinate design requirements and standards for PTC systems between all C&S Engineering departments, Mechanical, IT, vendors and consultants, and outside agencies to support operations and modification to Amtrak’s PTC systems.
• Maintain, review and update wayside PTC asset designs and configuration management based on current state and planned changes made by Amtrak, contractors, or other railroads.
• Support division and production C&S forces, Mechanical and other Amtrak departments in addressing technical issues and implementation of modifications to Amtrak’s PTC systems.
•Coordinate and attend simulation, factory acceptance testing, and lab testing as well as develop and review procedures for same events.
• Support field personnel in installation, field tests, troubleshooting, and safety inspections of PTC assets. Ensure any field changes meet Configuration Management policies and practices.
• Ensures PTC design files, databases, software, etc. are current, properly maintained and comply with Amtrak standards and practices and regulatory requirements.
• Provide engineering expertise to investigate systemic problems and develop solutions to reduce failures and increase availability of equipment. 
• Represent Amtrak in industry-wide working groups and interact with industry counterparts on configuration changes. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s Degree required OR equivalent combination of training, education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

• 6 years of relevant experience required
• Demonstrated experience in PTC design, including WIUs or subdivision/track databases, technical supervision, and planning/scheduling.
• Knowledge of FRA standards, rules, and regulations governing railroad signal and train control systems.
• Capable of developing solutions to individual PTC design problems.
• Knowledge of work rules and safety standards including AMT-2, Roadway Worker Protection, and NORAC/General Code Operating Rules. If individual has not qualified under these, then he/she must have the ability to do so within one year.
• Prior satisfactory job performance.
• Demonstrated experience in oral and written communication within and outside of the organization.
• Ability to communicate with field personnel to ensure accuracy of PTC system designs on file.
• Ability to shift priorities at short notice.
• Ability to organize and plan work.
• Ability to coach and mentor others.
• Ability to analyze situations/problems and propose solutions.
• Knowledge of Federal regulations and directives.
• Ability to function in stressful situations.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor's/Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering preferred.

• 8+ years relevant experience preferred. 
• Extensive field knowledge of PTC construction and maintenance practices.
• Extensive experience in designing and testing railroad train control systems.
• Experience in PTC design of office or communication segments.
• Experience developing and maintaining Configuration Management processes.
• Experience in network and radio communication.

 

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
