SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

The Sr/Electrical Engineer supports development and implementation of train control projects, with emphasis on Positive Train Control (PTC) systems.  The Sr/Electrical Engineer supports configuration control of train control hardware and software designs associated with Amtrak’s safety-critical PTC components. The Sr/Electrical Engineer provides critical configuration management (CM) oversight and troubleshooting skills to better ensure the safety of changes made to the PTC system.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develop, test, and deploy monitoring tools to integrate with existing Amtrak ACSES PTC monitoring and notification systems.  Assist ACSES engineers and field forces with using these tools.
  • Perform technical reviews of ACSES back-office configuration-managed items, including Safety TSR Server (STS), a safety-critical component for the ACSES system.  This requires evaluation of requirements and design specifications, lab test procedures, and vendor release notes.
  • Execute lab and test procedures in conjunction with our system integrator and our dispatching system teams; develop/review test reports and relevant test evidence for these tests.
  • Adhere to quality standards and procedures.  Review modules for quality assurance and checks compliance with application architecture standards and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).  
  • Evaluate existing applications and platforms and provides recommendations for system enhancements by conducting gap analysis, identifying feasible alternative solutions and assisting in the scope of modifications.
  • Perform job duties in an office and field work environment.
  • Occasional travel and overnight/weekend work while performing maintenance or upgrades that require system or network outage.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering with six years relevant experience; or ten years equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Programming and/or systems analysis experience with a displayed mastery of multiple program languages, including C++, Java, Python, Rust, and Web languages.  Prior development experience with Linux development.
  • Prior experience with safety-critical system and component design, troubleshooting, and/or configuration management.
  • Prior satisfactory job performance is required.
  • Ability to organize and plan work.
  • Ability to analyze situations and technical problems.
  • Ability to shift priorities at short notice.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail in analysis and work products.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering with eight years relevant experience; or twelve years equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge of FRA standards, rules, and regulations.
  • Extensive knowledge of software system design concepts and processes.
  • Experience with PTC system back-office design, implementation, troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge/understanding of security principles and software implementation, including PKI, TLS, OS hardening, Pen Testing.
