SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

 

The Senior Sustainability Specialist (internally known as Senior Sustainability & Climate Specialist) will be responsible for embedding and tracking sustainability efforts across the business in line with Amtrak’s Climate Commitment. The Commitment includes key actions to decarbonize operations including the reduction of diesel fuel use, sourcing 100% carbon-free electricity by 2030 and integrating sustainability into the core of our business. This position will be responsible for developing initiatives, tracking progress, and planning Amtrak’s annual sustainability strategy to align with the long-term carbon and resource reduction goals. This role could be remote.  

 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

• Develop and implement Sustainability Program standards, policies and long-term plans that apply to operations throughout the organization 
• Manage Amtrak’s greenhouse gas emissions inventory including data collection, calculation, and reporting according to Greenhouse Gas Protocol across Scopes 1, Scope 2 Location and Market-based and all categories of Scope 3
• Establish sustainability standards and process for evaluating services and supply chain providers. Refines supply-chain Scope 3 inventory process and guidance through partnership with the Supply Chain group and other business units 
• Create emissions reduction initiatives, pilot and coordinate efforts in coordination with subject matter experts across the company
• Create and track operational metrics to then measure against program goals, communicate effectively with involved stakeholders to share progress internally and externally 
• Coordinates responses to external requests including APTA, UIC, state and federal agencies as well as client requests.  
• Continually assess Amtrak’s alignment with state and federal climate initiatives and benchmark within the transportation industry. 
• Support the development of long-term operating plans and assess the operational growth impacts on ESG goals
• Work with IT and Operational stakeholders to develop Sustainability tools including an ESG management system 
• Identify and implement improvements in sustainability programs and training.  

 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental or related sciences, sustainability, business or equivalent combination of undergraduate education, training and work experience.
• 6+ years’ work experience including development of sustainability program elements, GHG accounting, preparing communications, and managing projects.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated presentation and management skills 
• Demonstrated coordination and facilitation skills
• Broad knowledge of key areas of sustainability, UNSDGs, and GHG/CAP Emissions 
• Strong proficiency using PC-based software programs including spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel); Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint presentation software; and data management systems
• Self-motivated and able to work independently

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

• Professional or related certification or ability to obtain certification

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
