SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Amtrak Police Department’s Mid-Atlantic South Patrol Division is seeking a qualified intern whose primary responsibilities will be to provide administrative project support to the 100+ members of this Division of the Amtrak Police Department.

 

Amtrak Police Department’s (APD) College Student Internship provides qualified students with practical work experience that compliments their academic course work.  It also provides the Amtrak Police Department with an opportunity to involve college students in various aspects of police work. APD’s Internship is designed to provide students with an opportunity to integrate theory and practice. The internship is a paid, non-sworn position. Hours vary.  The intern may work up to 24 hours per week when classes are in session and 40 hours per week during holiday and summer breaks. Interns will gain valuable work experience, on-the-job training, and have an opportunity to develop a professional networking base for the future positions in government service or law enforcement.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assists the Deputy Chief, Mid-Atlantic Division in providing research, technology and administrative projects of the Amtrak Police Department. Duties will include:

  • Assistance with coordination of a wide-range of projects in support of the Mid-Atlantic patrol operation.
  • Assisting with research, development, and implementation of projects on topics ranging from crime statistics/ analysis, enhanced information-sharing,  state-supported partner initiatives, Explorer and Cadet programs, Community/School Resource, tenant and vendor security awareness, stakeholder training creation, as well as general administrative duties.
  • Presenting research results on a variety of administration functions using computer programs such as MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint.
  • Organizing and maintaining files for the various projects and completing documentation when necessary.
  • Assisting with creating and maintaining standard operating procedures, instructional materials, and presentations relative to patrol procedures.
  • Performing other duties as required.

 

PREFFERED WORK EXPERIENCE:
Strong PC skills including experience in storing, securing, retrieving, sharing, transmitting, analyzing and using data.

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION:

Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, Political Science, Statistics or a related field.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft 360 and statistical software packages.
  • Above average grade point average requirement.
  • Proficient in research methods, and technical writing.
  • Detail oriented and organized.
  • Ability to complete projects within timelines and under minimal supervision.

 

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: 
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
