Job Summary

The Sr. Engineer position is for a Civil or Mechanical Engineer to provide technical expertise for movable bridge projects, covering the full lifecycle from initial design and construction to ongoing maintenance and inspection. This role involves detailed mechanical and structural analysis, the development of contract documents, and field evaluation of existing systems. 

This position will require travel to bridge locations and working with Amtrak Division and field personnel to troubleshoot field problems and provide solutions to support railroad operations and maintain the State of Good Repair of Amtrak’s movable bridges on the Amtrak rail system.

Essential Functions

  • Perform mechanical and structural design and detailing for bridge machinery, including hydraulic systems.
  • Develop contract plans, specifications, calculations, and cost estimates for new construction and rehabilitation projects.
  • Conduct field inspections of mechanical systems on movable bridges during condition assessments and construction.
  • Document findings, identify potential issues, and recommend repair or maintenance solutions.
  • Collaborate with maintenance teams to ensure the implementation of effective maintenance schedules, including cleaning, lubrication, and parts replacement.
  • Self-perform design services on small design projects with limited oversight.
  • Lead the design of individual projects including scope development, schedule, budget, plans, and both prescriptive and performance specifications.
  • Provide technical support to Amtrak’s field staff as a Movable Bridge Subject Matter Expert.
  • Provide technical support during construction and respond to submittals, shop drawings, RFI’s, and change order requests and/or coordinate with and manage the DOR on associated Construction Phase Services

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, collaborative and relationship building skills with demonstrated experience both within and outside an organization.
  • Must be able to initiate work from a bare problem statement and perform / manage all investigation, design, and contract packaging to drive toward an efficient result with minimal impact to railroad operations.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work autonomously to identify, troubleshoot and develop solutions for project-specific challenges.
  • Experience in design, construction, and project management of movable bridge projects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering.
  • 6 years of relevant experience
  • Experience with the design, maintenance, and inspection of movable bridges.
  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills.
  • Ability to perform both office and field work, including work at heights.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects. 
  • Demonstrated experience working in a matrix organization
  • Ability to obtain Professional Engineering License within 3 years
  • Experience in management of movable bridge projects using outside engineering consulting firms.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a matrix organization.
  • Valid drivers license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Master’s Degree
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Prior work experience writing RFP’s, bidding, and contracting with (or as an employee of) engineering consulting firms.
  • Understanding of both passenger and freight railroad operating environments

 

Work Environment

  • Travel to project office and project site is required.
  • This position will work 4 day in the office/on site with 1 day remote.
  • Work weekends as needed.

The salary/hourly range is $103,700.00 – $134,460.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
