This position is a tiered position. Incumbents will have a position level assigned based on their skills and experience, and in alignment with position development plans. Position placement is at Amtrak’s sole and absolute discretion.   

 

 

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Sr/Field Engineer will assist in the day-to-day operations of the Structures Production Department to include the maintenance and construction of bridges, platforms, fences, drainage improvements, station block ties, staircases, retaining walls, walkways, and handrails. Daily tasks will include responsibilities both in the office and in the field in all types of weather conditions to support a 24/7 operation. Territory is inclusive of the Harrisburg Line (Harrisburg to Philadelphia) and the Philadelphia Line (Philadelphia to DC).     

 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist the Manager Engineering Production in planning all construction phases for the installation of new bridges and other structures.
  • Coordinate and schedule all work activities in conjunction with various departments to accomplish and adhere to established work schedules.
  • Request and monitor the status of procurement for all materials and services required.
  • Ensure the proper delivery, storage, and installation of materials.
  • Observe field activities to ensure conformance with safety protocols and correct activities that do not conform, assist in driving improvement in the overall safety culture, and implement safety work plans for the prevention and elimination of personal injuries and hazardous conditions on Amtrak property.
  • Communicate with the Structures Design office and provide technical support in the field for all maintenance and construction activities.
  • Support planned work on weekends and nights in the field.
  • Schedule technical training, safety training, safety compliance training, and physical exams for all direct reports. 

 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent work experience and training in position of similar capacity.
  • 3 years of relevant experience required.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple projects in various locations and to effectively motivate and communicate with field crews.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.  
  • Demonstrated knowledge of project management including scheduling, budgeting, estimating, and coordinating efforts with other technical disciplines.  
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA Construction, specifically fall protection.  
  • Demonstrated skills and experience with MS Office, creating spreadsheets, presentations, memorandums, and utilizing other applications to perform job functions.   

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer or ability to acquire.
  • 6+ years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of steel and concrete design and implementation.  
  • Demonstrated knowledge and applied experience in railroad operations, operating rules, and divisional operating processes and procedures.
  • Position is responsible for 24/7 operation, however it does not require overnight stays
  • Available to work at various times to support railroad operations including night and weekend shifts.
  • Combination of office and field environment working in all weather conditions.   

 

 

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

 

The salary range is $93,080 - $120,630 for the Field Engineer and $108,000 - $139,960 for the Sr Field Engineer. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
