SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
This role is responsible for development and support of multiple applications and platforms including, program design, coding, testing, debugging and documentation of real-time HP Nonstop server applications. Responsible for supporting the work of onsite support team members and troubleshooting application problems as required. Creates, updates, and maintains technical documentation in support of the system software including configuration and setup guides and other operational procedures. It is a leadership position that is well-versed practitioner of software engineering best practices and ensures software is developed with high quality. 

 

Daily tasks include reviewing development progress, ensuring any issues are resolved quickly, working with project managers, IT service owners and IT service offering leads to keep all parties  formally updated and aware  of development underway, as well as issue  resolution status’.
This role meets regularly with stakeholders to understand the business requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions. This role confirms solutions alignment with business goals, and IT strategies I as well as, compliance with the organization’s architectural standards. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Designs, codes, tests, debugs, and documents Nonstop Guardian software development using the C, TAL, and C++ programming languages.
  • Designs, implementations, and maintains AMTEC track model databases and associated software.
  • Designs, develops, and implements Nonstop server application software for AMTEC train movement personnel
  • Provides technical subject matter expertise (SME), while managing across diverse teams, owns deliverables, manages to deadlines, communicates across teams to achieve harmony with existing technology architectural direction and company strategies.
  • Owns and leads the software development approach as an engineering exercise; confirms requirements are clear, follows a documented development methodology, and makes sure a unit testing regimen is followed to deliver code per designs.  
  • Guides mid and junior level technologists in the design and development of solutions for complex application problems, API design, data services, platform services, cloud services and infrastructure services to meet user requirements and align to strategic goals and the Enterprise Architecture
  • Creates and updates documentation as necessary to ensure architectures, designs, and other descriptions are up to date and describes the as-deployed system.   
  • Leads the development planning process with customers, IT business analysts, architects, and team members
  • Works with architecture and technology to codify development tools, code reusability standards, improve design documents. 
  • Develops design specifications and sizing estimates for technical requirements. 
  • Confirms all development work is in harmony with all standards as well as ensuring the overall implementation is connected to Amtrak's technology strategies. 
  • Adheres to quality standards and procedures.  Reviews modules for quality assurance and checks compliance with application architecture standards and SLAs.  May assist in defining development guidelines and standards to be utilized in software development/integration. 
  • Provides support of AMTEC operations ensuring reliable system performance and user accessibility as required.
  • Identifies and analyzes AMTEC computer system operation problems; implements resolutions in a timely manner ensuring system availability and minimal disruption to train movement
  • Proactively recommends and provides ongoing maintenance of applications. Supports AMTEC Site manager in addressing operational problems, and user requests as required
  • Assists in the development of user guides and training documentation.
  • Provides technical guidance or system process expertise.  
  • Develops reports and presentations for senior management, as needed.

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, information systems or business management 
  • 9+ years relevant experience or 13+ years of relevant work experience in subject matter expert capacity required to satisfy education and experience requirements.
  • Detailed knowledge of real-time programming in Nonstop Guardian in C, TAL, and C++.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Access database application development and programming.
  • Knowledge of HP Nonstop Guardian utilities, including TACL, FUP, SCF, compilers, and linkers.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of general railroad operations and signaling concepts.
  • Extensive experience programming and/or systems analysis experience with a displayed mastery of multiple program languages.
  • Can adapt programming methodologies of the team to better fit the project scope and unique needs that may arise.   
  • Have a broad level of understanding surrounding information systems and application architecture standards. 
  • Can focus on business goals while ensuring development is completed on time. 
  • Ability to work well under deadlines and in a flexible environment.
  • Must have experience/in-depth knowledge of business operations and systems requirements processes including ability to measure short- and long-term business goals.  
  • Must possess the ability to utilize adaptable communication skills to effectively translate between technical and business language. 
  • Must possess the skill to educate project team members on business unit goals and objectives and educate the business on the value of information technology. 
  • Ability to identify, propose and oversee the execution of business solutions as well as interpret documents communicating business needs and requirements. 
  • Must possess the skill to assess the client needs through direct interaction and identify opportunities to develop the business through effective use of technology.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 11+ years of relevant experience in a Subject Matter Expert capacity.
  • Master’s Degree.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills. 
  • Excellent communication skills - both oral and written.
  • Experience with Linux and Windows software development using C++.
  • Experience with Java development.
