POSITION SUMMARY:
The Design Operations Extern position is a great opportunity to gain an introduction to the multi-discipline engineering technical design review process at Amtrak as part of the rebuilding of America’s passenger railroad infrastructure. As part of the Planning and Engineering Support group within the Capital Delivery Department, this position will assist with the processing and distribution of design submissions from an operations perspective prior to the actual release and process of the technical review of the engineering design phase drawings.
Collectively, the Engineering Design Operations team works in close collaboration with the Engineering Design Management team and is responsible for the intake process of technical design review submittal requests, as well as other similar requests, is responsible for performing an initial precursory review of engineering documents at intake prior to review commencement, planning and scheduling the acceptance of design review submissions, developing and monitoring the anticipated duration of the technical review, developing and monitoring the anticipated cost of design reviews, channeling each design submission to the appropriate design reviewer(s), monitoring for review completion and subsequent return of design review comments to the external customer, as well as producing progress reports and organizing and maintaining a log of records of the overall live design submission. As part of the operations function, the Engineering Design Operations Team is also responsible for overseeing and maintaining the library of Engineering Practices, Specifications and Standards that govern the internal and external technical design reviews.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assisting with the intake process of incoming design review submittals and related requests.
- Assisting with the updating of the library of Engineering Practices and Standards on the team SharePoint.
- Assisting with the development of cost estimates for technical design submissions for each project.
- Assisting with static and live PowerBI reporting in relation to design review duration and status.
- Rotating to the Design Management Team to gain an understanding of the concurrent and downstream processes that take place to our controls process.
- Rotating to the Document Management Team as available to help with preparing, scanning, indexing, and watermarking, original, large format historical documents and reviewing newly digitized documents to gain an understanding of what happens after the prior to and after live project documents go into closeout phase.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Recently graduated within the last 3yrs or no later than May 2025 with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Business Administration, Operations, Digital Communications, or a related field.
- Desire to learn or further develop knowledge about the railroad industry.
- Detail-oriented with ability to multi-task.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other Microsoft Office 360/365 products.
- Quickly understands and uses processes, technologies and ideas that are continually being updated.
- Ability to work under time constraints and with essential deadlines.
- Must possess strong interpersonal skills and be a team player.
- Good written, organizational, and oral communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Familiarity with design and construction design documents.
- Familiarity with Excel.
- Familiarity with the importance of Standards and Policies.
- A strong number sense.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Primarily main-office environment.
- Railroad right-of-way and/or project site visits may be required occasionally for short durations, based on department and/or specific project need.
COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
The hourly range is $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc. In addition, paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
Summer 2025 internship program will run from May 19th - August 8, 2025. Office hours are 7:30 AM to 4 PM. Monday's to Wednesday's are in-person, Thursday's and Friday's are remote.
