POSITION SUMMARY:
The purpose of this position is to attract new engineers into Amtrak’s Engineering Track Department, providing an entry point for students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from an accredited university. Candidates for the position will have the opportunity to apply their engineering skills in both the office and field and to gain firsthand work experience in the various aspects of railway engineering, particularly as it relates to maintaining and constructing track infrastructure.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Rotate through various sub-groups of the Track Department. 
  • Assist Track Standards group with standards, specifications, and vendor design reviews. 
  • Assist Track Design group with track layouts and design plan reviews. 
  • Assist Track Clearances, Inspection, and Testing group with track geometry testing, curve modification design, and capital maintenance planning. 
  • Assist Survey group with on-track survey operations. 
  • Attend office meetings, field meetings, and conference calls. 
  • Assist in the management and supervision of engineering resources in the field such as rail grinding, Sperry car testing, concrete tie inspection, and vegetation control. 
  • Assist in providing technical, logistical, and administrative support to ensure the successful completion of assigned project tasks within scope, schedule, and budget. 
  • Receive instruction on and become familiar with Engineering safety standards, work procedures, and operating practices.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution. 
  • Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering, or similar field. 
  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum. 
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior work experience in design, maintenance, or construction. 
  • Previous construction or railroad industry experience. 
  • Specific interest or desire to work in the railroad industry. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Some experience with CAD software (MicroStation and/or AutoCAD)

 

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

 

The hourly range is $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc. In addition, paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year. 

  

Summer 2025 internship program will run from May 19th - August 8, 2025.
