Job Summary

The Surveyor is responsible for managing and executing survey operations in support of Amtrak design, planning and construction needs. This position oversees survey crews in their performance of existing railroad infrastructure surveys or providing layout for construction forces. The Surveyor may be called to perform field surveys when necessary. The Surveyor provides day-to-day directions, work assignments, and field supervision of a 3-person Amtrak survey field crew. The Surveyor ensures compliance with safety rules, sets productivity expectations, and monitors work quality standards. The Surveyor coordinates closely with the Survey & Mapping Principal Engineer, Amtrak Design Engineers and Construction Forces.  The Surveyor ensures accurate, high-quality survey data is collected and processed and that survey data and cutsheets are delivered to design teams and construction forces on schedule. The role includes a flexible balance of field and office responsibilities based on workload and operational needs.

The Surveyor may represent Amtrak Contracting Officers as their technical representative (COTR) when land surveying issues are included in engineering, planning or other contracted services.

Essential Functions

  • Works autonomously and safely, supervising Amtrak field survey crew or consultant-provided survey personnel in surveying field work.
  • Scheduling Amtrak field survey crew.
  • Processes highly technical survey work tasks using mobile surveying solutions, robotic survey equipment, GNSS receiving equipment, data collection devices, digital and optical levels; takes accurate field notes and prepares sketches and project documentation.
  • Ensure survey deliverables are completed accurately, on schedule and in accordance with Amtrak standards and project requirements. Ensure project electronic files and documentation are organized into the survey department’s SharePoint site.
  • Review of track design geometry layout for use by track construction and maintenance forces, creates and distributes engineering cutsheets.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geomatics or Land Surveying
  • 10 years of relevant, progressive work experience in land surveying.
  • Professional Land Survey license or registration or a candidate eligible for licensure who is committed to obtaining professional licensure within a time frame determined by Amtrak management
  • Become qualified in AMTRAK RWP and AMT II

Preferred Qualifications

  • Managing survey crews.
  • Construction layout experience.
  • Working knowledge of survey adjustment and computer aided design software
  • Participation in a professional survey society.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Fundamental knowledge of general civil engineering principles.
  • Ability to read, understand and produce engineering drawings and documents.
  • Ability to absorb information, think critically and make sound engineering decisions.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, and Teams).
  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail and completeness.
  • Valid driver’s license

Environmental Conditions/Physical Demands

  • Field work and office work with flexibility based on project workload.
  • During the initial onboarding period, the Surveyor will spend up to 75% of working time in the field to become familiar with the railroad territory, learn Amtrak railroad surveying practices and get acquainted with the Field Survey Team.
  • Up to 30% travel may be required.
  • Occasional night work may be required.
  • Field work is performed outdoors on active railroad tracks and construction sites, and may involve exposure to weather, uneven terrain, and typical construction hazards.
  • Must follow all Amtrak safety policies and railroad operational rules.

The salary/hourly range is $94,300.00 – $122,256.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
