SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The scope of work to be performed by the electronic technician communications includes, but is not limited to, providing a central clearing-house point for Amtrak communications circuit problems.  Utilize digital computer hardware and remote microprocessor-controlled equipment to provide technical and troubleshooting assistance to field personnel in order to correct problems.  Provide interface between Amtrak, outside providers, and resellers and help determine area of responsibility as problems develop.  Provide key contact point for emergency operation in the event of communications systems failures and coordinate restoral procedures with Amtrak and outside personnel.  Maintenance of communications remote test equipment.  Coordination, installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance for all voice and data communications circuits and testing of communications equipment.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

•  Applicants may be required to qualify for the position by passing the electronic technician examination for communications prepared by System Communications Engineering Department.
•  The technician must be familiar with the division reporting structure, possess knowledge of data and voice circuit electronics, and have general knowledge of electronics.  
•  Must be capable of learning, understanding, and maintaining Amtrak’s cable plant.
•  Must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have a HS diploma or GED.
•  Applicants must have a valid driver’s license on the date of hire.    
•  Applicants must be able to perform basic mathematical computations including fractions and decimals.  


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

•  Electronic/electrical background or education preferred.
•  Communications, electrical and/or electronic experience preferred.
•  Previous railroad experience in communications preferred.

 

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
•  Must have excellent written and oral communication skills. 

•  Must be able to read and understand job information written in English.

 

The hourly range is $47.61 – $47.61 (with opportunity for increases, as per the applicable collective bargaining agreement, after beginning employment).
