This position is a tiered position. Incumbents will have a position level assigned based on their skills and experience, and in alignment with position development plans. Position placement is at Amtrak’s sole and absolute discretion.

 

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Trainmaster is responsible for managing train service crews and the development, implementation, and monitoring of operating policies, practices and standards for Conductors, Assistant Conductors, and Yardmasters system-wide. The Trainmaster also supervises engine service employees to ensure safe and efficient operation of trains in a specific area in division.

 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

•    Provide leadership, mentoring and guidance to train service crews.
•    Oversee operations, in coordination with Road Foreman, to ensure compliance with all regulations.
•    At locations where Crew Base Manager is not assigned, co-manage crew base with Road Foreman, to ensure all bulletins, equipment, postings, etc. adhere to regulations.
•    Manage employees for compliance with regulations and operating practices, and initiate action for non-compliance in consistent and fair manner.
•    Manage employees and train operations to optimize OTP and recommend ideas to improve performance.
•    Respond to service disruptions in area of responsibility; handle promptly and provide necessary written and verbal reports.
•    Interview, select and manage new-hire train service crew and ensure employees receive proper training and support.
•    Maintain employee records, conduct efficiency tests and ensure compliance.
•    Ensure all train service crews attend regulatory and Amtrak-mandated training classes, documenting and reporting training to ensure compliance.
•    Implement division’s safety plan.
•    Manage crew base budget for train service crews, provide information on variances, minimize overtime and ensure goals are achieved.
•    Conduct train service crew revenue audits


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
•    High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) High School Equivalency Diploma.
•    Demonstrated knowledge of CFR 49 requirements and UTU labor contracts.
•    Some knowledge of Amtrak policies and procedures


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
•    Bachelors Degree in Transportation, Business, or related field and/or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant work experience.

•    3-5 years of relevant train service or operations experience

•    Certified Conductor preferred
•    Qualified on physical characteristics of territory.
•    Prior experience as a train service crew.
•    Demonstrated business and financial management experience.


COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

 

The salary/hourly range is $105,000 - $115,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
