NOTE: This position is a tiered position. Incumbents will have a position level assigned based on their skills and experience, and in alignment with position development plans. Position placement is at Amtrak’s sole and absolute discretion.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES
The Sr/Lead Investigations Specialist investigates and resolves workplace disputes (including complaints of discrimination and harassment), as well as complaints of discrimination filed by Amtrak customers. Other key responsibilities include providing guidance and training to managers and agreement-covered employees on Amtrak’s Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy and assisting with HR Compliance projects and initiatives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Investigates complex and sensitive internal disputes, including complaints of discrimination and harassment, using best practice investigatory procedures.
- Prepares effective investigative plans. Collects and analyzes witness statements and documentary evidence and makes credibility determinations. Prepares thoughtful and thorough investigative reports and recommendations for corrective action.
- Advises and assists managers and other internal stakeholders on EEO related matters.
- Educates managers and employees, through one on one interactions and formal trainings, on prevention of workplace harassment.
- Builds internal professional relationships to effectuate HR Compliance initiatives and policies.
- Maintains thorough records of investigations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a combination of education, training, and relevant experience
- 3 years of relevant experience, including working in EEO, Law, Employee Relations, and/or Human Resources
- Ability to work independently and ensure investigations are completed within appropriate timelines
- Ability to handle multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment and quickly adapt to changing priorities
- Must be able to travel
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work with sensitive and confidential information
- Customer service focus and strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to analyze situations and take appropriate action to ensure resolution
- Good judgement, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent computer skills including Excel and PowerPoint
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of relevant experience, including working in EEO, Law, Employee Relations, and/or Human Resources
- S/PHR and/or SHRM S/CP Certification
- Experience in unionized environment
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Up to 25% travel, sometimes overnight. Occasional visits to industrial, mechanical sites.

- Fast paced and time-sensitive environment.
The salary/hourly range is $78,750 - $89,999 for the Sr Investigations Specialist and $91,830 - $119,00 for the Lead Investigations Specialist. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation. In accordance with DOT regulations (49 CFR § 40.25), Amtrak is required to obtain prior drug and alcohol testing records for applicants/employees intending to perform safety-sensitive duties for covered Department of Transportation positions. If an applicant/employee refuses to provide written consent for Amtrak to obtain these records, the individual will not be permitted to perform safety-sensitive functions.
