National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) has an opening for a Senior Principal Applications Systems Engineer in Washington, DC.

Job Duties: Provide subject matter expertise and technical direction for major projects involving systems analysis, design, development, integration, enhancement, and deployment as well as application support for various applications. Responsible for monitoring, administration, development, oversight and incremental enhancement of Amtrak’s platform and applications. Perform application development, respond to change and trouble tickets, monitor the platform for failures, exceptions and threshold issues, tune and optimize applications performance, test applications for product upgrades and patches, communicate with customers and upper management about platform and/or ticket status, and work on occasional minor enhancements as remaining work capacity allows. Collaborate with customers, business analysts and team members to understand the business requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions that must be aligned with business and IT strategies and are in compliance with the organization’s architectural standards. Consult in the project planning process with customers, IT business analysts, architects and team members. Work with customers to develop and analyze application packages and tools and determine optimum functionality requirements to meet those needs. Evaluate existing applications and platforms to provide recommendations for system enhancements by conducting gap analysis, identifying feasible alternative solutions, and assisting in the scope of modifications. Create technical design specifications and assist in sizing technical requirements. Evaluate new application packages and tools and develop multiple recommendations for the solutions.


Requirements: Employer will accept Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems or related field, followed by nine years of progressive, post-baccalaureate work experience in job offered or nine years of progressive, post-baccalaureate work experience in a related occupation. Experience must include experience working with: (1) PCI DSS Compliance; (2) payment processing and payment gateways; (3) JMS, MDB, EJB and Spring JMS; (4) IDEs including Anypoint Studio, Rational Application Developer, Eclipse, Sencha Architect, IntelliJ; (5) payment authorizations, settlement, charge backs and claims; (6) programming skills with Java/J2EE, .NET, Node.js, Python, Ruby; (6) SOAP, REST, JSON or XML based web services; (7) messaging technologies including IBM MQ, ActiveMQ, AWS Kinesis: (8) JDBC and ORM technologies including JPA, Hibernate, MyBatis; (9) AWS technologies; and (10) Spring Boot applications.
