The position is responsible for supporting all ridership and ticket revenue forecasting and demand modeling for both existing and proposed Amtrak services and works directly with all levels of Amtrak staff and all state partners within Marketing and Business Development as well as Strategy, Planning, and Accessibility, and Finance. Duties include maintaining and applying travel demand forecasting models and tools along with business analytics pertaining to the demand, addressing Amtrak ridership, ticket revenue, passenger miles, service levels, and pricing as well as competing modes of travel.




  • Prepares ridership and ticket revenue projections and budgets by train/route and market demand information to guide operating decisions and capital investments, utilizing econometric forecasting analytics/models.
  • Oversees, the maintenance, updating, and enhancing of Amtrak’s econometric forecasting analytics/models, identifying opportunities to improve accuracy and efficiency (and, where appropriate, implementing said improvements).
  • Conducts required demand-related route level analytics, including loss estimates, resulting from impacts from train cancellations or delays and the impact of significant service changes.
  • Collects and synthesizes consumer, marketplace, and competitor trends needed to support demand forecasting and analysis from multiple sources.
  • Participates in studies that require technical capabilities outside of Amtrak’s internal capability, including using sophisticated sampling, analytic / modeling, and multivariate analytical techniques such as conjoint analysis, regression analysis, discriminant analysis, segmentation, and cluster analysis.
  • Provides clear, concise, well-written reports that communicate complex technical issues and statistical methods in understandable, non-technical terms. At the same time, provides detailed documentation and written technical descriptions of sampling plans, methodology, multivariate techniques, ridership, and ticket revenue projection analytics /models, or any unique or proprietary methods used in forecasting work.
  • Oversees and interacts, as required, with professional service contractors to support demand forecasts and market research needed to enhance Amtrak demand forecast models and other demand forecast projects.




  • Bachelor’s Degree required OR equivalent combination of training, education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • 11-14 years of relevant experience preferred 
  • Demonstrated experience preparing travel demand forecasts
  • Experience with visualization software (Tableau, PowerBI) or other analytical tools.
  • Demonstrated exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working with network forecasting models (such as TransCAD, Cube/Voyager, and/or other similar packages) and GIS systems (such as ArcView).
  • Experience with one or more statistical programming languages (e.g., SAS, Stata, SPSS, R).
  • Excellent interpersonal and project management skills.
  • Effective writing, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills; time management; and conflict resolution and investigative skills.
  • Comfort with large amounts of complex data from multiple sources coupled with the ability to see linkages and relationships within and between sources.




  • Transportation planning experience.
  • Extensive project management experience.
  • Master’s degree in engineering, computer science, data science, economics, statistics or a related field.
  • Experience with Python/R, SQL, and/or other contemporary programming.
  • Debugging and code-reading skills.
  • Experience with survey sampling, data analytics modeling, and multivariate analytical techniques such as conjoint analysis, regression analysis, discriminant analysis, segmentation, and cluster analysis.




  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
