SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

As Sr. Director Innovation Operations, you’ll report to the AVP Innovation and Research to work across functions which serve the needs of Amtrak’s enterprise-wide customers to identify, develop, implement, and scale new solutions and services that transform our business by promoting hands on incubation and rapid minimum viable products (mv)Products - including new businesses and new experience cases for emerging capabilities and technologies.

 

You will help shape the innovation (mv)Product pipeline with ownership of scoping, budgeting and reporting, to ensure optimum utilization of (mv)Product style investment against the company priorities which will directly influence the success of solutions and services that are transforming public transportation.

 

This is an execution focused role for someone who is skilled in driving implementation, managing priorities, (mv)Products, and stakeholders to deliver solutions economically. Key to your success will be grit, the ability to navigate the complexities of a large organization, and a relentless drive to see solutions scale across the enterprise. You will be looked to as a trusted partner and problem solver, determinedly helping all stakeholders overcome obstacles and guiding solutions forward through the innovation framework.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Evangelize to and align senior executives, internal functional leaders, and external resources as needed to get buy-in, create clarity / align expectations, secure resources, and provide transparency / visibility.
  • Advocate for ideas/ concepts/ businesses building business cases and defining and executing in-market experiments to prove the desirability, feasibility, and business viability of concepts.
  • Scope concepts, connect them to a clear business/customer need, identify key senior and functional stakeholders, and articulate sharp and specific measures of success.
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams to validate opportunities, applying design thinking, lean startup, and other innovation methodologies (e.g., provocation-based research, low-fidelity prototyping, jobs-to-be done assessments, etc.) to (mv)Products.
  • Own critical innovation operations functions including planning, budgeting and process improvement, partnering with initiative leaders to scale high value, technology-enabled solutions and services from (mv)Products through deployment at scale.
  • Program responsibilities such as project communications, issue tracking, facilitating project meetings, managing deliverables, and ensuring resolution of escalated issues.
  • Create and maintain weekly, monthly, and quarterly KPI reporting and communicate this out regularly to key stakeholders.
  • Advise senior and executive leadership team on near-term, medium-term, and future innovation goals.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated success working closely with senior executive leaders, including empathetic listening skills to understand their goals and objectives.
  • Ability to map complex ideas to clear and action-oriented language that maximizes influence without authority through strategic communication skills.
  • Experience leading a team, growing a business, hitting goals, and succeeding in a cross-functional environment.
  • Bias towards action, talent for managing complex (mv)Products, driving high-level goals into actionable plans, and enjoy implementing processes.
  • Strong executive project management skills. Must be able to provide structure, navigate ambiguity, and lead creation of appropriate professional collateral (e.g., decks, white papers, design briefs, RFPs, project plans, etc.).
  • Proficient at managing a backlog and driving outcomes through data and metrics.
  • Willing to challenge the status quo to get things done.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 15+ years leading in a cross functional organization and influencing executive level management and key stakeholders.
  • Client expectation management, program management, financial management and product delivery experience.
  • Experience with innovation management best practices.
  • Requires demonstrated ability to launch and deliver multiple, concurrent initiatives economically.
  • Must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, work well with others in an integrated team environment, and must be self‐motivated.
