SUMMARY OF DUTIES:The Director, Continuous Improvement will be responsible for developing and implementing data driven strategies to bring efficiencies to the Human Resources (HR) department.  They will lead Continuous Improvement (CI) and waste elimination initiatives that enable HR to meet its goals in alignment with Amtrak’s corporate strategy. This leader serves as a key member of the HR Transformation team, working with HR leadership and other key stakeholders to prioritize initiatives as part of a CI roadmap to ensure efficiency goals and other performance targets are met or exceeded.  This role is responsible for leading and developing a team of CI professionals, ensuring that they are current continuous improvement, and research techniques and methodologies. They will utilize the appropriate lean tools including six sigma, theory of constraints (TOC), Kaizen, 5S, and other specific problems solving and continuous improvement tools to ensure that continuous improvement is implemented and producing results in improving internal controls, HR processes, and the employee experience throughout Amtrak.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead the effort to understand business process issues and efficiency performance drivers
  • Work with the HR leaders to develop a standard set of metrics to track operational performance
  • Execute the strategy for how the Continuous Improvement team will support HR centers of excellence to meet their goals
  • Lead the effort to work with the stakeholders and end-users to validate and improve results, clearly communicates, and coordinates the efforts with senior management and other related stakeholders
  • Direct teams of Lean experts to lead and facilitate teams utilizing the appropriate process improvement, Lean and Six Sigma tools and methodologies to deliver efficiencies
  • Create and present content related to strategic continuous improvement initiatives to senior leaders
  • Acts as mentor, teacher and coach to the organization for strategy development and continuous improvement methodologies to cultivate a culture that is always improving and focused on eliminating waste in all forms
  • Actively participate in the continuous improvement community of practice to foster adoption of Lean artifacts, standards and techniques while driving operational excellence and promoting a culture of continuous improvement and waste elimination


MINIMUM QUALIFCATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required OR equivalent combination of training, education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
  • Comprehensive knowledge of LEAN principles and tools, preferably Kaizen, Lean, or Six Sigma certification
  • A proven toolkit of operational excellence methodologies coupled with the ability to implement and drive process improvements down through all levels of the organization to improve efficiency and productivity while eliminating waste
  • Proven experience applying quantitative techniques to solve real-world problems.  
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, summarize, communicate, and act on quantitative and qualitative data 
  • Proven experience effectively interacting with and influencing senior business and functional leaders
  • Experience in the translation of strategic initiatives into actionable, quantitative, and sustainable plans that are communicated and tracked throughout the organization
  • Experience in the implementation of continuous process improvement, lean and/or six sigma methodologies in the operational or customer service environment. 
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint)
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in the implementation of continuous process improvement, lean and/or six sigma methodologies in the operational, customer or employee service environment. 
  • Advanced formal training/certification preferred in one or more tools sets e.g., Master Black Belt Certification
  • Proven history delivering transformational initiatives from concept to implementation
  • Experience effectively interacting with and influencing senior business and functional leaders
  • Strong leadership, decision making, and team building skills. 
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. ·

 

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
