Job Summary
This position can be based in Washington DC; Wilmington, DE; Philadelphia, PA; and/or Chicago, IL.
The Manager, Ancillary Strategy & Development, is a member of the Pricing & Ancillary Strategy team within the Pricing & Revenue Management, Sales, and Distribution (PRMSD) department at Amtrak. This position is responsible for the development, execution, and optimization of all ancillary revenue programs across Amtrak’s national network. The role is responsible for identifying new revenue opportunities, partnering with Product team to evaluate and execute new opportunities, managing vendor relationships, and enhancing the customer experience through value-added services such as seat upgrades, baggage options, retailing strategy—including both onboard retail programs and digital merchandising—, digital enhancements, and developing product bundles. The role will be tasked with identifying new ancillary products and growth of a $100M ancillary revenue portfolio.
On an on-going basis, the position is responsible for:
• Defining and evolving the ancillary portfolio strategy
• Launching new products and optimizing existing ones
• Managing vendor and stakeholder relationships
• Driving data-informed decisions through performance monitoring and reporting
Essential Functions
• Support the development of strategic roadmaps for ancillary revenue programs aligned with PRMSD goals, and lead implementation efforts.
• Partner with Product, Digital, and Operations teams to evaluate, pilot, and launch new ancillary offerings
• Manage vendor relationships and oversee delivery for third-party services
• In partnership with department leadership, design and implement pricing strategies, including dynamic pricing, bundling, and merchandising tactics
• Collaborate with IT and digital teams to integrate ancillary offerings into booking flows, mobile apps, kiosks, and onboard systems
• Build dashboards and reporting tools to monitor KPIs such as attach rate, yield, and customer satisfaction
• Present performance insights and strategic recommendations to leadership
• Standardize processes, document best practices
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Statistics, or related field with 7+ years of experience in ancillary revenue, product management, or commercial strategy within the travel or transportation industry OR Master’s degree in Business, Economics, Statistics or other related fields with 5+ years of experience in ancillary revenue, product management, or commercial strategy within the travel or transportation industry
• Demonstrated success in launching and optimizing revenue-generating products/programs
• Demonstrated experience with data management tools and working with “big data”
• Demonstrated experience managing vendors and negotiating commercial agreements
• Demonstrated communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including presentations, consensus building, and strategy alignment
Preferred Qualifications
• 9+ years of relevant experience
• Experience with change management
• Experience with passenger rail reservation systems
• Experience with travel industry ancillary ecosystems
• Experience with revenue management systems
• Experience with agile product development and cross-functional project management
• Experience with customer segmentation, behavioral analytics, and A/B testing
• Knowledge of mobile UX and digital merchandising best practices
• Experience with (“BI”) business intelligence tools
• Experience with SQL (in any platform)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Expert proficiency with SQL and familiarity with Amtrak PRM data sources
- Expert proficiency with Microsoft Office (particularly Excel)
- Team player with excellent interpersonal and mentorship skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills, able to explain complex concepts simply
- Detail-oriented and able to prioritize and meet multiple competing demands
- Ability to create well-formatted, impactful presentations and present to senior leadership
- Demonstrated ability to make decisions with an appropriate balance of analysis and timeliness
- Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze and interpret data quickly
- Advanced understanding of PRM philosophies and their relationship to supply and demand
- Able and willing to pivot should business needs or priorities change
The salary/hourly range is $113,200.00 – $146,664.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
