SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
This position is responsible for efficient reliable and self-directed, as appropriate, support to in-house Tort Claims Litigation attorneys, Outside counsel, and Claims professionals in a team environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Works with in-house counsel, Claims, Human Resources, Operations, and other internal groups regarding the collection and maintenance of evidence and discovery materials related to litigation brought under the Federal Employers’ Liability Act (FELA) and related federal laws and regulations, and other personal injury and property damage claims and litigation brought by business invitees, passengers, contractors, pedestrians and motorists at railroad crossings, trespassers and other third parties.
- Works with Claims, in-house, and outside defense counsel to support developing defenses in claims and litigation, in responding to written discovery, including researching and gathering internal corporate/system-wide information; and identifying corporate witnesses and corporate records as needed.
- Aids in coordination and organization of Claims teams’ immediate response and claimant contact related to mass tort events, liaises with Emergency Management as needed.
- Performs internet searches and other on-line research regarding witnesses, issues and other information.
- Assembles and maintains library banks for internal resources, commonly produced material, research and brief databases.
- Prepares responses to third-party subpoenas and FOIA requests.
- Assists in preparing, implementing, and managing litigation holds.
- Additional duties as required and as abilities progress.
- Incumbent is responsible for file maintenance, including mailings, copying, scanning and filing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree or Paralegal Certificate
- A minimum of three to five years of relevant experience working in a law firm or corporate legal department environment, including an understanding of the litigation process
- Experience evaluating and responding to discovery and/or subpoenas.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Must be able to work in a busy environment and prioritize and manage multiple ongoing matters and adapt to changing priorities.
- Ability to work effectively and professionally with internal clients and outside counsel.
- Ability to work with a variety of personalities in a strong team environment
- Strong attention to detail

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working with railroads or other industrial environments with extensive personnel policies, labor agreements, and discipline processes.
- Experience working in the transportation or insurance industries.
- Quick learner and ability to multi-task with minimal supervision.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Lifts, carries or otherwise moves and case boxes weighing up to 15 pounds.
- Requires working in the office environment several days a week.
COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
The salary/hourly range is $65,160 - $84,450. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation. In accordance with DOT regulations (49 CFR § 40.25), Amtrak is required to obtain prior drug and alcohol testing records for applicants/employees intending to perform safety-sensitive duties for covered Department of Transportation positions. If an applicant/employee refuses to provide written consent for Amtrak to obtain these records, the individual will not be permitted to perform safety-sensitive functions.
