COMPANY: National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak)
TITLE: Principal DevOps Engineer
LOCATION: Washington, D.C. (and various unanticipated locations throughout the U.S.) (remote position)
DUTIES: Ensure the reliability, efficiency, and scalability of Amtrak's train operation systems. Design, implement, and manage CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, Azure Pipelines, AWS Codepipelines) to streamline the deployment of software and infrastructure updates, ensuring minimal disruption to train services in AWS & Azure clouds. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, automate and optimize workflows, enhance system monitoring, and implement robust incident response strategies. Maintain and improve cloud infrastructure, ensuring security compliance (PCI-DSS, GDPR), and manage configuration and version control. Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, conduct root cause analysis for system issues, and implement preventive measures.
REQUIREMENTS: Must have a Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Network Engineering, Cybersecurity or a related field, followed by five (5) years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience as a Principal DevOps Engineer or any occupation related to Computer Systems Engineering. Must also have five (5) years of experience with each of the following: (1) Designing and developing in clouds platforms including AWS and Azure, including using advanced services in these clouds and cost optimization strategies. (2) Applying the concept ‘Infrastructure as code’ to design & develop IaC (infrastructure-as-code) using Terraform, Cloudformation (now known as AWS CDK) to manage complex, multi-environment infrastructures. (3) Designing and developing using docker and Kubernetes, with experience in the blue/green deployments, rolling deployments, and canary deployments. Must also be able to design & develop custom operators to work within these containerized development environments. (4) Architecting and implementing sophisticated, multi-stage CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Jenkins, AWS Code pipelines, and GitHub Actions. (5) Designing and developing security and compliance into DevOps practices with embedding automated security scanning, secrets management, and regulatory compliance requirement generation. (6) Designing and implementing comprehensive monitoring solutions with Prometheus, Grafana, and Datadog. (7) Scripting using Python, Go, and Bash with a focus on robust scalable automation solutions. Travel required up to 25% of the time to various Amtrak locations throughout the U.S. All experience may be acquired concurrently. Remote work permitted in accordance with standard company policy. SALARY: $147,784 to $179,300 per year
