POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is located within Amtrak’s Enterprise Network Engineering & Convergence (ENEC) organization, which provides Information Technology (IT) services across the Digital Technology (DT) spectrum including: onboard passenger Wi-Fi, Train-to-Ground (T2G) communications, third-party Distributed Antenna System (DAS) and cellular deployments, Network Data Services, Firewall / VPN Infrastructure Security and Management, Passenger Information Systems (PIDS), Onboard Information Systems (OBIS), and IT/OT convergence projects.

 

As an Intern within ENEC, you will support a team of Technologists, Engineers, Project Managers, and Business Stakeholders in implementing a wide range of technologies both in stations and on trains, as well as work in a lab environment testing the latest advancements in Cybersecurity, Network Security, and Digital Omni-Channel Communications.  
Individuals selected for this opportunity will work both independently under the supervision of a manager, and collaboratively as part of an intern cohort, to deliver innovative solutions to complex business and technical challenges. They will learn practical, hands-on business and technical skills and tools necessary to jumpstart their careers in various fields of interest.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The essential functions below represent some of the key focus areas interns will gain first-hand exposure to during their Amtrak internship:

Project/Program Management & Business Analysis
•    Closely collaborate with senior managers, project/program managers, engineers, business analysts, project stakeholders, and subject-matter-experts to help manage multi-million-dollar strategic and tactical technology initiatives
•    Drive the development of business requirements, test cases, and project management fundamentals governing scope, schedule, budget, and quality
Data Analysis/Visualization
•    Evaluate and analyze network and/or application data, and leverage Business Intelligence tools like Microsoft Excel, Tableau, and Power BI to create views, pivot tables, etc., and provide insights on data
Network Engineering & Cybersecurity
•    Investigate network and/or application data with project teams
•    Gain exposure to advanced Network Management & Security tools 
•    Work within a lab environment to prototype networking solutions for implementation across Amtrak’s national footprint
•    Explore advanced onboard and Train-to-Ground Wi-Fi and Radio Frequency (RF) Engineering technologies and passenger usage statistics
Continuous Improvement (Lean Six Sigma) / Business Process Re-Engineering
•    Identify, develop, and present areas of opportunity for operation research activities to influence business actions and capitalize on process improvement projects
Application Development
•    Develop software solutions and scripting that support the implementation of technology solutions on trains and in stations
•    Leverage data lakes and advanced modeling techniques to create heat maps and visual representations of data that produce meaningful insights and tell a story


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited school in Business Management, Cybersecurity, Network Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Computer Science, Project Management, Mathematics, or a closely related field
  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at a minimum
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher
  • Candidates must possess strong interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills given the high-degree of strategic importance, project/technology complexity, and potential senior management engagement in support of ENEC initiatives

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Relevant work experience (e.g., full-time roles, internships, school projects) and examples of applying research techniques to solve real-world problems
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills including writing, oral and presentation
  • Strong self-learning skills, personal drive and enthusiasm with analytical skills, and ability to innovate and simplify current processes and practices 

 

COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills

 

 

The hourly range is $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc.  In addition paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
