SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Senior Data Scientist facilitates the design and development of decision modeling processes and creates data algorithms to drive enhancement strategies for higher operational efficiency at all Service Delivery and Operations Department levels using exploratory, inferential, predictive, causal, and mechanistic analysis. The position works closely with business stakeholders to understand their goals and builds data and decision models to extract insight that help them achieve their goals.The Senior Data Scientist is responsible for building advanced analytics models to respond to the requests of business partners for generating insights, identifying improvement opportunities and prioritization, and discovering signals and patterns toward intelligent decision-making.The Senior Data Scientist works on major projects and will also engage with process and data experts throughout Amtrak including Information Technology, Subject Matter Experts, Continuous Improvement, Statisticians, and Data Analysts to ensure a unified approach to extract the data the business needs and help analyze the data and share insights with peers. 
 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Builds advanced analytics models for the generation of insights, and identification of opportunities to innovatively use available data to discover signals and patterns, and drive towards intelligent decision-making.
  • Formulates guided, multifaceted analytics against large volumes of data.
  • Prepares, cleans, normalizes, and validates data for utmost integrity before usage, and assists with ad-hoc data analysis requests, as needed.
  • Interprets and analyzes data using exploratory mathematic and statistical techniques based on the scientific method.
  • Analyzes various data points (unstructured and structured) and employs programming to clean, massage, and organize the data.
  • Analyzes problems and determines root causes.
  • Develops productive working relationships with internal and external parties. 
  • Helps conduct expert data analytic strategies using data analytic tools to identify trends or to solve a variety of business problems. 
  • Collaborates with other Data Analysts and Data Engineers to ensure a unified approach to extract the data that the business needs and helps analyze the data and share insights with peers.
  • Adheres to quality standards and procedures.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required OR equivalent combination of training, education, and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Advanced analytical knowledge of data
  • Statistical analysis
  • Conducting big data analysis
  • Data conditioning
  • Programming advanced computing
  • Developing machine learning algorithms (classification, regression, clustering, model validation, etc.)
  • Developing software and data models
  • Executing predictive analytics
  • Proficient with one or more programming languages (Python, R, SQL, Alteryx, SAS, etc.) and hands-on working experience with database systems, business intelligence, and visual reporting tools (BOBJ, Tableau, Power BI, etc.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed 4 days in the office, with 1 day remote.  
  • May require traveling up to 10% of the time. 
  • Additional duties as required.

 

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

 

The salary/hourly range is $86,500 - $111,996. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
