Job Summary

The Sr. Manager, IT Systems Design & Development owns one or more IT processes within one technical area. The position manages services provided to one or more internal and external customer(s). The Senior Manager IT, Systems Design & Development will be working on multiple projects as a technical delivery team owner, and sometimes as a project leader while managing matrixed resources. This position will have responsibility for systems administration and security and support. Senior Managers within the Systems Design & Development job family work closely with various team members to understand the business requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions.
 
The Amtrak SAP echo system is tightly integrated with business and IT strategies and in compliance with the organization’s architectural standards. Sr. Managers IT, Systems Design & Development participate in the Full Systems Development Life Cycle. The Sr. Manager is responsible for implementing and supporting application software which is delivered on time and within budget. The Senior Manager IT, Systems Design and Development will possess a solid understanding of management and integration methodologies. The manager will have responsibility for overall technical SAP Platform engineering. Thus, they will be responsible for capacity planning, disaster recovery, system performance, and technical monitoring. They will also drive the technical tasks for our Major SAP Program cutovers and be responsible for driving cloud governance across our growing cloud SAP echo system. 

Essential Functions

  • Work with Release Manager and Functional teams in creating schedule of annual maintenance activities.
  • Regularly partner with Release Manager to make sure upcoming activities are adequately supported as well as make sure communications across the various organizations occurring.
  • Will strengthen Lifecycle ownership through collaboration with various stakeholders including GRC and Cyber Security and the Product Owners to make sure landscape wise we are up to date software, OS, middleware, and Database and resolve critical vulnerabilities in a timely manner as well as communicate outages. Also, this resource will partner with our GRC and business users to make sure we have clean Segregation of Duties rules and no unmitigated violations.
  • Serve as accountable owner for our Technical SAP Standards including Technical Architecture, RTO/RPO, cutover bridge leadership, SLA governance, Disaster Recovery setup and testing, Landscape/Transport strategy, and overall SAP NS2/RISE governance.
  • Will need to serve as gatekeepers in enforcing controls across both ECC and S4 in a TBD environment thus will need to create efficient processes for their team members to uphold key controls and governance.  
  • Drive ownership and responsibility for SLA oversight, and technical cutover leadership during major releases and migrations across our SAP echo-system.
  • Along with various stakeholders, one will meet with our various SAP Product Owners monthly and where needed implement process/focus items.
  • Will be transitioning technical support for the S4 project in the hyper care phase to regular run support to our Tier 2 support vendor. Providing cross-training/documentation will be a key activity.
  • Look/groom team members who can fill in/take over in the future.  
  • Provide oversite to all capital project activities done by the technical resources and where needed make priority decisions.
  • Responsible person will make sure all engineering resources are keeping their Work Items on the Intake/Jira Kanban board are up to date.
  • Sr. Manager will be accountable for team project deliverables, delivery quality and on time.
  • Hold team meetings with the Engineering resources via Teams and document meeting minutes.
  • Conduct regular 1-1’s and perform annual reviews for each of the direct reports.
  • Onboard/Offboard resources as appropriate and request necessary access.
  • Make sure skill-wise across the technical areas that have the right resources at a technical/attitude perspective.
  • Work with the Sr Technical Operating resource to make sure cross-training is occurring on CAPEX projects to ensure support post hyper care is successful.
  • Work with the Technical capital project resources to make sure new documentation/adjustments of diagrams is occurring.
  • Make sure there is regular representation on the scheduled calls.
  • Engages with various stakeholders to create Roadmaps in the SAP ecosystem. Overall, they can partner with the Product Owners and Architecture and drive quality project deliverables.
  • Can speak to a broad audience on SAP issues whether on Project or Architectural meetings.
  • Make sure we are staying current on Application, Operating Systems, Database patches, and versions on the Project landscapes.
  • Support any Financial Audit requests as they arise in a timely manner.
  • Work with Cyber Security to resolve major vulnerabilities in a timely manner.
  • Work Incident’s/Change Requests/Problems/Service Requests in a timely manner, this person is the first level contact for major Incidents during hyper care and cutover. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
  • 9 years of relevant experience managing development projects.
  • 5+ years of firsthand experience with SAP Technical experience: specifically, Basis, Cloud Infrastructure, BTP Management

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience. 
  • Plus 11 years of relevant work experience.
  • Master’s Degree in technical/business or equivalent.
  • SAP Basis or SAP ABAP/PO Development experience.
  • Domain knowledge of transportation systems
  • PMP and Agile Scrum certified.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience managing technical resources who have worked on ECC, Fiori Gateway, PO, BTP, Portals, SuccessFactors, and Ariba on Demand
  • Experience working in a RISE and/or NS2 environment in a operations management role.
  • Experience in working on S4 Migration projects/teams relates to the technical team (Basis, Security, and Development).
  • Experience working in large complex companies that operate in real time 24x7 IT operations to successfully service external customers.
  • Have utilized Microsoft Project, SharePoint, Atlassian tools such as JIRA and Confluence
  • Experience working in a mission critical SAP 24/7 echo-system/landscape and experience with major migrations/cutovers.
  • Demonstrates experience as leading S4 Technical migrations, experience operating in RISE/S4, and led DR/HA efforts in that environment.
  • Strong Agile delivery experience.
  • Experience managing multiple SAP functional/vertical stakeholders as well as experience leading teams in a self-sufficient manner.
  • May require knowledge of one processes/services. Business experience should include assignments in one or more business and technical processes.
  • Requires experience in managing teams and building relationships with people at a variety of levels.
  • Requires demonstrated ability to launch and deliver one or more IT project(s) on time and within budget.
  • Must possess effective communication and people skills, work well with others in an integrated team environment, and must be self‐motivated.
  • Initiative-taking, organized, and able to support multiple highly paced initiatives.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

The salary/hourly range is $149,400.00 – $193,644.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
