SUMMARY OF DUTIES 
The Sr Principal Data Engineer is responsible for transforming data into a format that can be easily analyzed and building data solutions following the industry standard in data analytics.  The position entails monitoring, administration, development, oversight and incremental enhancement of Amtrak’s platform and applications. The Sr Principal Data Engineer is responsible for expanding and optimizing our data architecture, as well as optimizing data flow and collection for cross functional teams to support the next generation of products and data initiatives. This role leads software developers, database architects, data analysts and data scientists on data initiatives and will ensure optimal data delivery architecture is consistent throughout ongoing projects. This role provides technical leadership coaching and mentoring to team members as well as technical guidance and/or system process expertise. The Sr Principal Data Engineer leads and works on major projects while providing subject matter expertise and technical direction and is also responsible for systems analysis, design, development, integration, and enhancement. The position works closely with customers, business analysts and team members to understand the business requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions. These solutions must be aligned with business and IT strategies and in compliance with the organization’s architectural standards. This role has the potential of optimizing or even re-designing Amtrak’s data architecture. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 
 

•   Works on projects that may span a broad range of systems. Requires expertise in multiple technical environments and possesses an increased level of business knowledge. Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, the following: 
•    Creates and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture. 
•    Assembles large, complex data sets that meet functional/non-functional business requirements. 
•    Identifies, designs and implements internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc. 
•    Builds the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using Structured Query Language (SQL) and Cloud Big Data technologies.

•    Define packetized statement of work for analytics projects, evaluate vendor proposals and assist in vendor selection based on the quality and cost-efficiency of technical solution.

•   Create roadmaps for data warehouse, data lakes and data hubs in collaboration with architecture team

•    Builds analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights into customer acquisition, operational efficiency and other key business performance metrics. 
•    Works with stakeholders including the Executive, Product, Data and Design Teams to assist with data-related technical issues and support their data infrastructure needs. 
•    Creates data tools for analytics and data scientist team members that assist them in building and optimizing our product into an innovative industry leader. 
•    Works with data and analytics experts to strive for greater functionality in our data systems.
•    Leads the deployment of new modules, upgrades and fixes.
•    Adheres to quality standards and procedures. Reviews modules for quality assurance and checks compliance with application architecture standards and Service Level Agreements. Defines development guidelines and standards to be utilized in software development/integration. 
•    May provide ongoing maintenance of applications. 
•    Analyze data extracts from system based on user requirements.
•    Prepares and presents functional design specifications and design project process flow. 
•    Provides technical leadership coaching and mentoring to team members.  Provides technical guidance or system process expertise.  
•    Develops reports and presentations for senior management, as needed.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 
•    Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Management plus 9+ years relevant experience or 13+ years of relevant work experience
•    Extensive experience programming and systems analysis experience. Have a broad level of understanding surrounding application architecture standards, data analytics environments and tools that include:
•    Advanced working Structured Query Language (SQL) knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases.

 

•    Experience building and optimizing ‘big data’ data pipelines, architectures, and data sets. 
•    Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement. 
•    Strong analytic skills related to working with unstructured datasets. 
•    Build processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency, and workload management. 
•    A successful history of manipulating, processing, and extracting value from large disconnected data sets. 
•    Working knowledge of message queuing, stream processing and highly scalable ‘big data’ data stores. 

 

Experience using the following software/tools or equivalence:


*Experience with big data tools such as AWS EMR
*Experience with SQL/NoSQL databases such as Redshift, Aurora, DynamoDB
*Experience with data pipeline and workflow management tools such as Informatica, AWS Glue
*Experience with cloud services preferably AWS microservices
*Experience with stream-processing systems such as Kinesis
*Experience with both scripting and general-purpose, object-oriented programming languages such as Python, Java

*Experience with implementing Customer 360, data hubs and data lakes

    

•    Ability to work well under deadlines and in a flexible environment. 
•    Must have leadership skills, experience/in-depth knowledge of business operations and systems requirements processes including ability to measure short- and long-term business goals.  
•    Must possess the ability to utilize adaptable communication skills to effectively translate between technical and business language. 
•    Must possess the skill to educate project team members on business unit goals and objectives and educate the business on the value of information technology. 
•    Ability to identify, propose and oversee the execution of business solutions as well as interpret documents communicating business needs and requirements. 
•    Must possess the skill to assess the client needs through direct interaction and identify opportunities to develop the business through effective use of technology.
•    Must have proven track records of building large scale solutions for predictive and prescriptive analytics capabilities using modern cloud services and facilities.
•    Must have proven track records on creating data insight from both structured and unstructured data in data lakes and data warehouses using modern technologies and tools in machine learning and artificial intelligence.
•    Provides subject matter expertise (SME), while leading across diverse teams, owns deliverables, manage to deadlines, communicates across teams.
•    Develops reports and presentations for senior management, as needed. 
•    Effectively perform all IT Controls as applicable.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 
•    Master’s Degree in Computer Science or Information Systems
•    11+ years’ experience preferred
