The Senior Solutions Architect is a Director level senior professional responsible for providing strategic development leadership for wired and wireless network programs; this is a forward-looking, innovator role requiring a continuous improvement mindset. The Director will provide technical guidance to support strategic planning for large-scale, multi-year Amtrak network capital projects. S/he will be expected to engage routinely with Amtrak suppliers and a diverse group of technical and non-technical Amtrak resources.


Amtrak seeks a professional with the ability to inspire adoption of new approaches to varied networking concepts (e.g., MPLS, SD-WAN, and wireless networks) and drive execution of new designs. This leader supports the Director, Wayside Connectivity, Network Convergence, and IT Systems Design with developing and optimizing railroad wayside and onboard communication technologies. Additionally, s/he will also provide network engineering oversight for the onboard Wi-Fi program which supports both passenger-facing and secure onboard revenue generating and onboard information systems (OBIS). As a highly experienced engineer and advisor, s/he will develop architecture solutions and designs, support large scale wireless initiatives, direct network convergence engineering, and support a new in-building coverage enhancement program. The Senior Solutions Architect will serve as the lead network strategist for an emerging Information Technology/Operational Technology (IT/OT) network rationalization and convergence program, and will lead IP network engineering and design efforts supporting onboard and railroad wayside networks, train-to-ground (T2G) data links, and RF engineering. As such this position requires expert-level systems engineering, and network deployment experience.


Specific engagements may include engineering support and oversight of a) operational network design analyses, b) wireless network testing proximate or on the Amtrak right-of-way, c) engagement with cellular carriers, d) Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) design reviews, e) and exploration of marketplace options for new technologies. The Director will also be responsible for producing and maintaining detailed technical architecture documentation as well as generating materials for, and briefing of, Amtrak executives.



  • Deliver expertise in WAN engineering including designing enterprise data and video networks
  • Drive innovation of IP networks and engage on topics requiring expert knowledge of MPLS, IS-IS, OSPF, BGP4, STP, RSTP, and 802.1 standards
  • Engage routinely with internal and external technical and non-technical resources
  • Provide critical leadership for network convergence opportunities where both cloud networking and data centers engineering expertise is required
  • Introduce Amtrak to emerging technologies in IP networking and the development, modernization,, integration, and consolidation of disparate Amtrak networks
  • Drive development and optimization of onboard Wi-Fi networks
  • Support field engineering visits in person
  • Travel as needed between 15%-25% (inclusive of local/regional site visits)


  • Must have work authorization in the United States
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field with 10+ years of relevant experience; 15+ years equivalent work experience if no degree
  • 11+ years of relevant technical engineering experience with 2- to 3-years’ experience leading engineering initiatives as a senior solutions architect
  • Current and relevant technical credentials
  • Significant expertise in:
    • Managing multi-year data network design initiatives involving multi-million dollar network solutions
    • Ensuring strategic alignment of IT system requirements with organizational priorities
    • Optimization of underperforming network systems
    • Oversight of systems architecture, tools, Information Security, platforms and/or networks for a mission critical IT program.
  • Network convergence strategic planning, design, and execution for corporate enterprises, to support cloud and traditional data center integrations
  • Demonstrated experience influencing and informing executive leadership, business, and technical stakeholders
  • Ability to successfully manage portfolio-level architecture engagements
  • Must possess senior level communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to travel internationally



  • Supplier relationship management, program management, and financial management experience preferred
  • Cellular carrier engineering experience in RF systems development and/or wireless network engineering
  • Railroad experience, preferably in large-scale networking and/or IT/OT network integrations, and familiarity with rail environments and IT/OT technologies.
  • Master’s Degree in STEM fields with 13+ years relevant work experience
  • Public speaking to audiences of 50 or more on technology topics


  • Must have demonstrable experience presenting strategic plans to senior executives


The salary range is $160,410-$207,900. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
