SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Director, Technology Architecture is responsible for providing strategic network development leadership and guidance to ensure technology direction and investments align with architectural guidelines and business strategy. As a technical leader and advisor, s/he will develop architecture solutions and designs, and will play a vital part in helping drive Information Technology/Operations Technology (IT/OT) convergence initiatives for connected devices, networks, systems, and services.This role will support the Director, Wayside Connectivity & Network Convergence and a team charged with improving and expanding upon wayside and onboard communication technologies. The position will serve as the lead network strategist for an emerging program supporting IT/OT innovation along Amtrak’s 480-mile stretch of tracks comprising the Northeast Corridor. Technical efforts include trackside/wayside Train-to-Ground (T2G) connectivity, third-party Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), cellular 5G and 4G LTE carrier service enhancements, and integrations with Amtrak’s corporate data networks and back office systems. The Director, Technology Architecture will lead IP network engineering and design efforts supporting onboard networks, Train-to-Ground (T2G) voice/data links, and wayside connectivity technologies. This position requires expert-level L1/L2/L3 system design, engineering, and network deployment experience. The Director will also be responsible for producing and maintaining detailed technical architecture documentation and supporting deck ware that can be consumed by Amtrak executives.S/he will also provide network engineering oversight for Amtrak’s national onboard Wi-Fi program, supporting both passenger-facing and secure onboard train technologies like Point-of-Sale (POS), Onboard Information Systems (OBIS), among others. The Director will provide technical direction to support strategic planning for large-scale, multi-year IT capital projects. S/he will be expected to engage routinely with Amtrak suppliers and a diverse group of technical and non-technical Amtrak resources.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Ability to apply expertise in LAN/WAN engineering including designing for voice, data and video networks at Access, Aggregation, and Core network levels.
• Innovate Amtrak networks thorough understanding of modern service provider TCP/IP data networks using standards and technologies including but not limited   to MPLS, IS-IS, OSPF, BGP4, STP, RSTP, 802.1q, 802.1ah and emerging standards.
• Apply superior knowledge, skills and experience with routing hardware, software, protocols, in collaboration with technical and non-technical team members.
• Deliver critical insights on convergence opportunities based on expert knowledge of cloud networking as well as engineering within traditional network data   centers.
• Design, implementation, and operations management of current and emerging technologies in IP networking and network convergence including overall technical   leadership of product, program, and engineering teams, on the development, modernization, and integration/consolidation of disparate Amtrak networks.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or related field with 11+ year’s relevant experience; 15+ years   equivalent work experience if no degree.
• 11+ years of relevant technical engineering and managerial experience with 2- to 3-years’ experience leading an Architecture Practice.
• Current and relevant technical credentials (e.g., CCIE) and/or ITIL certification. 
• Must demonstrate in resume significant expertise: 1) Managing one or more multi-year Information Technology initiatives that deliver complex multi-million   dollar network systems and infrastructure, 2) Leading LAN/WAN/IT programs; 3) Ensuring strategic alignment of IT system requirements with organizational   priorities; and 4) Oversight of systems architecture, tools, Information Security, platforms and/or networks for a mission critical IT program.
• Must have work authorization in the United States
• Network convergence strategic planning, design, and execution for corporate enterprises, to support cloud and traditional data center integrations.
• Demonstrated experience influencing and informing executive leadership, business and technical stakeholders.
• Ability to manage portfolio-level architecture engagements and deliver best practice recommendations that ensure architecture work is comprehensive and   correct.
• Must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, be able to collaborate effectively with a diverse team, and be self-motivated with a delivery   focus.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Well-rounded skillset including relationship management, program management, financial management and technology product delivery experience preferred.
• Prior cellular carrier engineering experience with DAS or small cell design, development, and deployments as well as TCP/IP network design.
• Railroad experience, preferably in large-scale networking and/or IT/OT network integrations, and familiarity with rail environments and IT/OT technologies.
• Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Business Management, or related technical field with 13+ years relevant work experience.
