Job Summary
Role is based in Wilmington, DE | Washington DC | Philadelphia, PA. Requests for Remote work will be reviewed but not guaranteed.
We are seeking a Lead Software Engineer to deliver high-quality software solutions that meet and exceed business needs. This role encompasses full lifecycle responsibilities including systems analysis, design, development, integration, testing, deployment, and ongoing support. The ideal candidate will drive technical excellence, resolve complex problems, and contribute to continuous improvement across platforms and processes.
Essential Functions

Collaborate with customers, architects, and team members throughout the product development lifecycle

Organize and document technical requirements based on business needs

Design and implement scalable software solutions and enhancements

Develop and maintain software applications using modern frameworks and tools

Define and execute functional and non-functional testing strategies, including automation

Ensure ongoing maintenance, performance optimization, and support of applications

Provide technical leadership and mentorship to development teams
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
- Plus 6 years of professional software development experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the railroad or broader transportation industry is a plus.
- Plus 8 years of relevant work experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong proficiency in Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, SQL, Angular or React, and Node.js

Deep experience with Spring/SpringBoot and RESTful API development

General cloud platform experience (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP)

Familiarity with messaging and data-streaming platforms (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ)

Skilled in version control systems (e.g., Git)

Excellent documentation and communication skills

Ability to articulate complex technical concepts in actionable business terms

Strong grasp of data structures, design patterns, and architectural frameworks

Expertise in frontend, backend, and cloud-native development

Extensive experience with Agile methodologies (SCRUM, SAFe)

Ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines and adapt to changing environments
The salary/hourly range is $103,700.00 – $134,460.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employee’s assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee’s base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
